A five-goal first half powered Monticello to a commanding 7-0 victory over St. Teresa in regional semifinal soccer action Monday, Oct. 19, sending the Sages into the regional championship.
Playing at home, Monticello built a substantial advantage before halftime and paired its offensive production with a shutout. The victory improved the Sages’ record to 12-4, while St. Teresa finished its season at 8-13.
Monticello scored five times in the opening half, establishing a 5-0 lead and putting the Bulldogs in a difficult position heading into the break. That first-half output provided the foundation for the win, giving the Sages a comfortable cushion with another half still to play.
The Sages added two more goals after halftime to extend the margin to 7-0. St. Teresa held Monticello to fewer goals in the second half but was unable to generate a scoring response.
Defensively, Monticello kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard through both halves to complete the shutout. The combination of seven goals and a clean sheet gave the Sages a decisive postseason result with their season on the line.
For St. Teresa, the loss brought its postseason run to a close against a Monticello team that established a clear advantage in the opening half.
The Sages now advance to the regional championship, carrying forward a strong semifinal performance highlighted by their five-goal opening half and scoreless defensive effort.
