The Mt. Zion Braves used a dominant defensive performance at the net Tuesday night to earn a 25-14, 25-12 victory over the Taylorville Tornadoes in Apollo Conference action.
Taylorville entered the road matchup coming off a convincing 25-14, 25-11 victory over Mattoon, but the Tornadoes encountered a difficult challenge against a Mt. Zion team that has been playing strong volleyball of its own. The Braves had recently earned straight-set victories over both Mattoon and Monticello before placing third at the St. Anthony Invitational over the weekend.
From the opening set, Mt. Zion’s defense at the net played a major role in shaping the match. The Braves repeatedly challenged Taylorville’s attacks with blocks, making it difficult for the Tornadoes to find consistent openings offensively. While complete block totals for Mt. Zion were not available, their presence along the net was evident throughout the night.
Taylorville continued to battle and looked for ways to work around the Braves’ defense, but Mt. Zion maintained control and captured the opening set 25-14.
The challenge continued for Taylorville in the second set. The Tornadoes worked to generate offense, but Mt. Zion continued to close off attacking lanes and prevent Taylorville from developing sustained momentum. The Braves eventually finished the set 25-12 to complete the two-set sweep.
Despite the loss, several Tornadoes contributed statistically. Senior Nora Thomas led Taylorville’s defense with 10 digs, while senior McKynlee Siempelkamp added nine digs. Senior Molly Smith recorded four digs as Taylorville worked to extend rallies against the Braves.
Offensively, senior Elsie Williamson led Taylorville with four kills, while freshman Ella Bertelsen added three. Smith contributed two kills and a team-high six assists, while Reagan Fassero recorded five assists and a kill. Thomas, Charleigh Whitehead and Thea Suslee each added a kill.
Smith also provided Taylorville with its strongest production from the service line, finishing with four aces and seven service points.
For Mt. Zion, the victory was another strong defensive showing and continued a successful stretch of matches. The Braves’ ability to control the net proved to be the difference Tuesday, as Taylorville was never able to fully break through a defense that consistently disrupted its attack.
Taylorville, meanwhile, continued competing despite the difficult matchup and received contributions throughout its lineup. The Tornadoes will have an opportunity to regroup quickly, with Lincoln scheduled to visit Taylorville on Thursday.
The two Apollo Conference opponents are also scheduled to meet again later this season, with Taylorville hosting Mt. Zion on Oct. 15.
