Central A&M and Shelbyville met Friday night in a matchup that featured plenty of defensive stands from both sides, but several explosive plays ultimately allowed the Raiders to pull away for a 28-0 victory over the Rams.
The final score was confirmed among Friday night’s statewide Illinois high school football results.
Despite the final margin, Shelbyville’s defense made Central A&M work throughout stretches of the game. The Rams produced multiple fourth-down stops and consistently found ways to halt Raider drives. Central A&M countered with a defense of its own that kept Shelbyville off the scoreboard while creating turnovers and favorable field position.
The Raiders generated one of their first major opportunities when Emett Stenger intercepted a Shelbyville pass with approximately six minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Central A&M soon turned to some creativity offensively.
The Raiders dialed up a flea-flicker that resulted in one of the biggest plays of the night. Rhett McLain delivered the pass downfield to Kadyn Higgins, who completed the play for a 67-yard touchdown reception to give Central A&M the early advantage.
Shelbyville responded defensively in the second quarter. The Rams stopped Central A&M on fourth down with 11:49 remaining, preventing the Raiders from immediately adding to their lead.
Central A&M’s defense answered with another takeaway of its own. Logan Sarver recorded an interception with 9:06 remaining in the second quarter, giving the Raiders their second interception of the first half.
The remainder of the quarter turned into a battle for field position. Central A&M kept one possession alive when Victor Ravelo converted a fourth-and-10 with 5:26 remaining, but Shelbyville’s defense stiffened near its own goal line.
With Central A&M facing fourth-and-goal in the closing seconds of the half, Shelbyville’s Kit Ullmer came through with a sack to end the threat and give the Rams another important defensive stop.
The game remained competitive into the second half before Central A&M began creating separation.
Ravelo supplied one of the turning points with 9:57 remaining in the third quarter, breaking free for a 70-yard touchdown run. The extra point was unsuccessful, but the long run gave the Raiders another explosive scoring play and extended their advantage.
Shelbyville’s defense continued trying to give its offense opportunities, while the Rams’ offense searched for a way through a Central A&M unit that repeatedly came up with stops. The Raiders forced a Shelbyville punt with 8:05 remaining in the third quarter and carried their shutout into the fourth.
Central A&M struck again almost immediately in the final period. Ace Spinner found the end zone with 11:54 remaining, and Ravelo followed with a successful two-point conversion.
The Raiders’ defense then stopped Shelbyville on fourth down, giving the ball back to an offense that capitalized once again. Ravelo finished the ensuing opportunity with a two-yard rushing touchdown, helping Central A&M build its eventual 28-point advantage.
Even with the game slipping away, Shelbyville continued to battle. The Rams forced Central A&M into a turnover on downs with 3:31 remaining after stopping the Raiders on fourth-and-goal from the six-yard line — another example of Shelbyville’s defense continuing to compete regardless of the score.
Central A&M’s defense responded one final time by forcing a Shelbyville punt with 1:56 remaining, allowing the Raiders to finish off the 28-0 shutout.
For Central A&M, the victory was built around complementary football. Stenger and Sarver provided first-half interceptions, Higgins delivered the 67-yard receiving touchdown, and Ravelo broke loose for the 70-yard score before adding another touchdown in the fourth quarter.
For Shelbyville, the scoreboard didn’t fully reflect some of the Rams’ defensive work. Shelbyville came away with several fourth-down stops, including a goal-line stand late in the first half and another inside its own 10-yard line late in the fourth quarter. The Rams simply couldn’t turn those stops into points against a Central A&M defense that answered throughout the night.
After suffering consecutive losses to Eureka and Tri-Valley, Central A&M’s performance represented a strong response as the Raiders returned to the win column. Central A&M had entered Friday coming off a 48-7 loss at Tri-Valley.
In the end, explosive plays and a complete defensive effort made the difference. Central A&M created turnovers, prevented Shelbyville from finding the end zone and received scoring contributions from multiple players to secure a 28-0 victory, while the Rams showed resilience defensively with several key stops of their own.
