Williamsville delivered one of the biggest surprises of the night Friday, knocking off heavily favored Maroa-Forsyth 14-7 in a defensive battle that came down to the final minute.
The Trojans traveled to Williamsville expecting a tough matchup, but the Bullets were ready to defend their home field. With temperatures sitting at 48 degrees and rain pouring just 45 minutes before kickoff, it was the kind of night that reminded everyone what Illinois high school football is all about.
From the opening kickoff, both defenses set the tone. Maroa-Forsyth’s Cam Trendler made his presence felt by flying off the line, while Williamsville’s Gage Reedy helped keep the Trojans’ offense in check.
The Bullets struck first in the opening quarter when quarterback Kegan Peters delivered a perfect pass to Kaden Entwistle for a touchdown, giving Williamsville an early 7-0 advantage.
The second quarter featured much of the same defensive intensity, with both teams trading stops and punts. Maroa-Forsyth finally found its opportunity late in the half, getting the ball back with three minutes remaining. On the final play of the second quarter, Aiden Williams connected with Grady Rose for a touchdown, sending the teams into halftime tied at 7-7.
The defensive battle continued into the third quarter, as neither team could find the breakthrough needed to take control.
Williamsville finally broke through in the fourth quarter when Peters connected with Fisher White for a touchdown, putting the Bullets back in front, 14-7.
With their backs against the wall, the Trojans put together a drive and worked their way down to the Williamsville four-yard line. However, the Bullets’ defense delivered when it mattered most, stopping Maroa-Forsyth on fourth-and-goal to preserve their lead.
Williamsville appeared to have another opportunity to put the game away, but Peters threw an interception to Maroa-Forsyth’s Cooper Wise, giving the Trojans new life.
Maroa-Forsyth quickly faced a fourth-down situation of its own. Williams launched a deep pass toward a wide-open Declan Shannon, who had an opportunity for a potential game-changing touchdown but couldn’t secure the catch.
With time running out, the Trojans got one final break when they recovered a fumble with approximately 1:30 remaining.
The stage was set for one last chance.
On the first play of the ensuing possession, Williams looked downfield and sent a deep pass toward his intended target. The ball deflected off a Maroa-Forsyth offensive player and landed directly in the hands of Reedy, who secured the game-sealing interception for the Bullets.
Williamsville had done it.
In a game filled with defensive stops, missed opportunities and late-game drama, the Bullets held their ground and shocked Maroa-Forsyth on their home field, earning a hard-fought 14-7 victory.
On a cold, rainy night in Williamsville, the Bullets proved they could go toe-to-toe with one of the area’s top teams—and came away with a statement win.
