Williamsville made a statement Tuesday night, taking down Warrensburg-Latham in a Sectional Semifinal matchup, but the night belonged to junior standout Hannah Holliday.
Holliday entered the evening just one milestone away from 1,000 career kills and wasted little time reaching the historic mark, recording her 1,000th kill early in the match. Still only a junior, Holliday continues to establish herself as one of the premier players in the area.
The Bullets fed off the momentum and absolutely dominated the opening set, cruising to a 25-8 victory behind strong offensive execution and a solid defensive effort at the net.
However, the Cardinals weren’t going away quietly.
Warrensburg-Latham came out with a different energy in the second set, as Allison Cushing and Brettlyn Hickey helped lead the charge offensively. The Cardinals battled point for point, eventually forcing a 24-24 tie and turning the sectional semifinal into a thriller.
Both teams traded blows down the stretch, but when Williamsville needed a big play, Holliday delivered. The junior standout finished the match with a kill, securing a hard-fought 30-28 second-set victory and sending the Bullets to the Sectional Championship.
Following the win, ILSportsWire’s Jack Hart caught up with Williamsville head coach Beard to discuss the team’s performance, Holliday’s incredible milestone, and the upcoming championship matchup.
Coach Beard credited Warrensburg-Latham for its response in the second set but emphasized the importance of his team maintaining its intensity throughout the match.
“We needed to be a little bit more consistent tonight, but all the credit to Warrensburg in that second set,” Beard said. “They came out ready to go, and that’s kind of been our downfall this year so far, is kind of letting off the gas the second set.”
Beard also praised his team’s execution in the opening set, particularly its ability to spread the ball around and execute the game plan defensively at the net.
The conversation then turned to Holliday’s milestone, something Beard believes speaks volumes about both her individual talent and her impact on the Williamsville program.
“She’s been huge for our program overall. She ended up with her 1,000th tonight as a junior, and I think that’s pretty phenomenal,” Beard said. “She’s someone that makes people around her better, and she just elevates people’s play around her.”
With the victory, Williamsville now turns its attention to another familiar opponent.
The Bullets will face the Rochester Rockets on Thursday night at 6 p.m. for the Sectional Championship. Coach Beard knows preparation will be key with a quick turnaround and just one practice before the matchup.
“There’s a lot that we have to do between now and Thursday,” Beard said. “Just coming in and executing what we’re going to do blocking-wise and defensive-wise, I think will be the big thing.”
Williamsville is now one win away from advancing, and after a milestone night from Holliday, the Bullets will look to keep their postseason run alive Thursday.
