The Taylorville Tornadoes returned home in impressive fashion Thursday night, controlling the match from start to finish in a 25-14, 25-11 sweep of the Mattoon Green Wave at Taylorville High School.
The Tornadoes entered Thursday looking to bounce back from a straight-set loss at Mahomet-Seymour on Tuesday. Mattoon was also searching for a response after falling to Mt. Zion earlier in the week.
Taylorville wasted little time establishing control.
The Tornadoes put together a strong opening set, using consistent serving and a balanced attack to create separation from the Green Wave. Taylorville held Mattoon to just 14 points and closed out the frame 25-14 to take a 1-0 advantage.
Rather than allowing Mattoon an opportunity to answer, Taylorville became even more effective in the second.
The Tornadoes continued to apply pressure from the service line while limiting Mattoon’s opportunities to build momentum. Taylorville pulled away for a convincing 25-11 victory, completing the sweep and holding the Green Wave to just 25 combined points across the two sets.
Senior Nora Thomas led Taylorville’s attack with eight kills, providing a consistent presence at the net. Fellow senior Elsie Williamson added five kills, while Ella Bertelsen contributed four. Molly Smith finished with three kills and a block, and Charleigh Whitehead added two kills.
Smith also played a major role in directing the Tornadoes’ offense, recording a team-high 10 assists. Reagan Fassero contributed four assists, while McKynlee Siempelkamp added three.
Taylorville’s serving proved particularly effective. Smith recorded three aces and a team-high 14 service points, helping the Tornadoes string together extended scoring runs. Fassero added 11 service points, while Siempelkamp finished with eight service points and an ace. Thomas also contributed four service points.
Defensively, Taylorville received another balanced effort. Smith and Siempelkamp each recorded six digs, Thomas added four, Laila Hancock finished with three and Fassero contributed two.
The victory also continued Taylorville’s success on its home floor. The Tornadoes entered Thursday having won their previous three home matches.
For Taylorville, the performance was a strong response following Tuesday’s road loss. The Tornadoes controlled both sets, received contributions throughout their lineup and never allowed Mattoon to force a third.
Taylorville’s schedule continues with another Apollo Conference matchup Tuesday, Sept. 22, when the Tornadoes travel to face Mt. Zion.
