Taylorville Basketball Stays the Course with Coach Brown

According to Taylorville Daily News, the Taylorville School Board held its monthly meeting last night, where one of the key topics was the consideration to terminate Taylorville High School boys basketball head coach Ryan Brown.

After discussion, the board ultimately did not pass the motion to terminate Brown. The vote resulted in a 3–3 split, with board member Tonya Bowsher abstaining. With another abstention and no majority decision reached, the motion failed to carry—meaning Coach Brown will remain in his position.

Brown, who has led the program since 2015, guided Taylorville to a 14–17 record this past season. Throughout his tenure, he has been known as a strong presence in the community, working to rebuild a historically respected basketball program.

The meeting drew a passionate response from the community, with many showing support for Brown, while others voiced concerns stemming from recent controversy and allegations involving the program.

Several community members spoke during the meeting. Chuck Martin, a 1976 Taylorville graduate and former athlete, praised Brown and said he was “born to coach.” Taylorville Mayor Bruce Barry also expressed strong support, speaking highly of Brown both as a coach and as a person.

On the other side, community member John Williams—who filed a formal complaint—shared concerns based on conversations with local families. Additionally, former player Zach Woodall, a 2021 graduate, spoke about his brother’s experience, citing alleged negative interactions within the program.

Coach Brown addressed the board and community directly, stating he has always maintained an open-door policy and was unaware of some of the concerns until the meeting. He emphasized his willingness to address any issues moving forward and improve the program environment.

In the end, despite differing opinions within the community and board, the result means Coach Brown will continue leading the Tornadoes basketball program.
