The Taylorville Tornadoes showcased resilience and timely hitting Tuesday evening, using a decisive sixth-inning rally to pull away from Mattoon and secure a 5-3 victory in a tightly contested matchup.

Taylorville struck early in the bottom of the first inning when Maxx Grieme delivered a solo home run to right field, giving the Tornadoes a quick 1-0 advantage. Mattoon answered in the second inning with a solo shot of their own, evening the score at 1-1 and setting the tone for a back-and-forth battle.

The Green Wave continued to apply pressure in the middle innings. A key RBI double in the fourth inning gave Mattoon a 2-1 lead, and another run crossed in the sixth to extend the advantage to 3-2. Despite the deficit, Taylorville’s pitching staff kept the game within reach, preventing further damage and setting the stage for a late comeback.

That opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Tornadoes capitalized on patience at the plate and clutch hitting to ignite a game-changing rally. After working multiple walks to load the bases, Taylorville broke through with timely contact, highlighted by a run-scoring single from Carter Cappelini. Additional runs came across as the Tornadoes continued to pressure Mattoon’s defense, turning a one-run deficit into a 5-3 lead in a matter of moments.

Taylorville’s offense finished with eight hits on the night, led by Grieme, who went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and two doubles. Carter Hennings added a pair of hits, while Colton Gatton and Drew Morgan also contributed key base knocks during the rally.

On the mound, Isaac Repscher earned the win, delivering a steady performance over six innings while striking out four. Grieme came on in relief to close out the game, shutting the door in the seventh inning and preserving the victory.

Defensively, Taylorville remained composed under pressure, making key plays throughout the game to limit Mattoon’s scoring opportunities.
