2-7 Never Told the Full Story: Shelbyville’s Cinderella Run Continues With Win Over Pana

The 2026 IHSA football playoffs brought a new opportunity for teams across Illinois, with an expanded playoff format giving teams with difficult schedules another chance to compete for a state championship. One of those teams was the Shelbyville Rams, who entered the postseason with a 2-7 record after picking up a crucial Week 9 victory over Eureka to punch their ticket.

Since then, the Rams have been a completely different football team. After traveling to Carmi and taking down a strong winning team in the opening round, Shelbyville found itself just 16 miles down the road Saturday Afternoon for a second-round matchup against an old rival, the Pana Panthers.

The atmosphere was everything you would expect from a rivalry game. Both communities showed up in force, and the Panthers entered the contest with plenty of confidence after putting together a 7-2 regular season. But the Rams had no interest in letting their playoff run end.

Shelbyville came out firing from the opening whistle. Jayce Davis, who has been a major difference-maker since returning to the lineup, wasted no time making an impact. Davis broke free for a 50-yard touchdown run to put the Rams ahead 7-0.

After the Shelbyville defense forced a stop, the Rams went back to work with a trick play. Davis connected with Colin Jones for a touchdown pass, giving Shelbyville a 14-0 advantage after the opening quarter.

Pana responded in the second quarter after a fumble by Davis was recovered by Eian Vaughn, who took it back for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 14-7.

The Rams answered quickly. Quarterback Owen Beyers found the end zone on a rushing touchdown to extend the lead to 20-7, although the two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

Pana continued to battle and got another opportunity after a Shelbyville punt took an unfortunate bounce off Wade Reid of the receiving team. Eian Vaughn recovered the ball for the Panthers, giving Pana possession deep in Rams territory. Cayden Durbin capitalized with a rushing touchdown to make it 20-13.

However, Shelbyville had an answer once again, and it was a big one. On the very next offensive possession, Davis broke loose for one of the biggest runs of the season, taking it all the way to the house for another touchdown. The Rams extended their advantage to 28-13.

Pana had one final opportunity before halftime, but Shelbyville’s defense came up with another big play as Kit Ulmer intercepted a pass with just 10 seconds remaining.

The second half turned into a defensive battle, with neither team able to find the scoreboard. One of the biggest moments came deep in the third quarter when Shelbyville stood tall on the goal line, stuffing the Panthers on fourth down to keep their two-score advantage intact.

From there, the Rams leaned on their running game, controlled the clock and finished the job. When the final whistle sounded, Shelbyville had secured a 28-13 victory over its longtime rival, earning its second playoff win and extending its season once again.

Following the victory, IL SportsWire caught up with head coach Bill Duckett, quarterback Owen Beyers and lineman Jack Clark to discuss the remarkable turnaround and what has made this group so special.

A Team That Refused to Quit

For Shelbyville, the turnaround has been about much more than football.

Clark spoke about how the team has grown together throughout the season, explaining that early frustrations and disagreements eventually gave way to a stronger sense of family.

“We all just realized that we’re a team,” Clark said. “Beginning of the season, we’d been bickering. We just talked to each other the whole time. And then I think we all just clicked that we’re really a family.”

Clark also credited the team’s ability to stay focused and make adjustments against a talented Pana squad.

Duckett pointed to the return of Davis, who missed the first seven games of the season, as a major turning point. His ability to create big plays has opened up opportunities for everyone around him.

But the head coach also emphasized the importance of improved discipline, fewer mistakes and stronger play from both sides of the offensive and defensive lines.

The Rams have started playing together as a complete unit, and the results have been impossible to ignore.

It’s About How You Finish

Quarterback Owen Beyers knows just how much adversity this group has faced. After starting the season with seven consecutive losses, the Rams could have easily packed it in. Instead, they continued to fight.

“It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish,” Beyers said.

For Beyers, Saturday’s victory meant even more because of the rivalry and the opportunity to deliver a big win for the Shelbyville community.

“It’s a hometown rivalry. We’re not that far away. It just feels good to be a team that you don’t get to play very often,” Beyers explained.

He also reflected on his decision to return to football after initially considering focusing on basketball.

Looking back, he couldn’t be happier with that decision.

One More Week of Football

After beginning the year 0-6, Shelbyville has now won three straight games, including two victories in the IHSA playoffs. What once seemed like an unlikely postseason opportunity has turned into one of the most impressive stories in Central Illinois football.

Coach Duckett knows his team has earned this opportunity and is excited to see what comes next.

The Rams will now prepare for a third-round matchup against either Central A&M or Flora, with the opportunity to host another playoff game.

As Clark put it when asked about the upcoming opponent, it doesn’t matter who they face. The Rams are going to go out there and play their game.

A team that many counted out just a few weeks ago is now one win away from advancing even further in the postseason.

Shelbyville isn’t ready for the season to end, and after Saturday, neither is its community.
