Metamora Edges Breese Central 21–20 Behind Late Touchdown, Two-Point Conversion

Metamora delivered when it mattered most, scoring a touchdown and converting a go-ahead two-point attempt with 54.9 seconds remaining to defeat Breese Central 21–20.

Mark Asechilman’s second rushing touchdown of the fourth quarter brought Metamora within one point, and Elijah Edwards followed with the decisive two-point conversion. The late scoring sequence capped a comeback victory in a game that featured multiple lead changes and a dramatic finish.

Breese Central struck first, converting a field goal with 6:19 remaining in the opening quarter to establish a 3–0 lead.

Metamora answered early in the second quarter when Brayden Cox scored on a sweep with 10:56 remaining. The extra point put Metamora ahead 7–3, but Central’s kicking game kept the Cougars close. A second field goal with 8:58 left in the half cut the margin to 7–6.

Central reclaimed the lead just before halftime. Carson Weber caught a touchdown pass with 39.8 seconds remaining, and the ensuing extra point gave the Cougars a 13–7 advantage heading into the break.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, leaving the outcome to a fourth quarter in which special teams and conversion attempts became especially consequential.

Asechilman pulled Metamora even with a rushing touchdown at the 9:16 mark. Breese Central blocked the extra-point attempt, preserving a 13–13 tie and preventing Metamora from moving in front.

The Cougars then regained the advantage when quarterback Owen Kehrer kept the ball and rushed into the end zone. With the extra point, Central led 20–13, putting the pressure back on Metamora to respond.

Metamora found its answer in the closing minute.

Asechilman reached the end zone again with 54.9 seconds remaining, cutting Central’s lead to 20–19. This time, Metamora went for two and the lead. Edwards caught the ball and carried it into the end zone, completing the conversion that pushed Metamora ahead 21–20.

That score stood through the remaining seconds, securing the narrow road victory.

Asechilman supplied both of Metamora’s fourth-quarter touchdowns, while Cox accounted for its first score. Edwards provided the final two points that separated the teams.

For Breese Central, Weber’s touchdown reception, Kehrer’s scoring run and two field goals helped build leads in both halves. The Cougars’ blocked extra point also played a significant role in setting up the finish, keeping the game tied before Central moved ahead once more.

Ultimately, Metamora’s ability to answer a late deficit—and execute its final conversion—decided a tightly contested matchup by the smallest possible margin.
