Pana Dominates Gillespie in 68-0 Shutout Victory

The Pana Panthers put together a dominant performance on both sides of the football Friday night, overwhelming Gillespie 68-0 behind a relentless rushing attack, explosive plays and a defense that kept the Miners off the scoreboard from start to finish.

Pana established control immediately, scoring three times in the opening quarter before breaking the game wide open with four more touchdowns in the second.

Cayden Durbin started the scoring with 9:47 remaining in the first quarter, powering into the end zone on a five-yard run to give the Panthers a 7-0 advantage. Pana returned to the ground with five minutes remaining when Newt Campbell scored from one yard out, extending the lead to 14-0.

Durbin found the end zone again before the quarter was over. His second one-yard touchdown run came with 1:09 remaining and gave Pana a commanding 21-0 lead after the opening period.

The Panthers’ offense only became more explosive in the second quarter.

With 10:29 remaining before halftime, Ace Henschen broke loose for a 71-yard rushing touchdown, quickly extending the lead to 28-0. Just over two minutes later, quarterback Ryker Spracklen attacked through the air, connecting with Eian Vaughn for a 65-yard touchdown to make it 35-0.

Pana continued to find success on the ground as the half progressed. Derrek Ambrose scored twice in a span of just over two minutes, first on a four-yard run with 4:32 remaining and then on a 13-yard touchdown run at the 2:20 mark.

By halftime, the Panthers had built an overwhelming 49-0 advantage, with six of their seven first-half touchdowns coming on the ground.

Even with the game firmly in Pana’s control, the Panthers continued making plays in all three phases after halftime.

Vaughn, who had already produced the 65-yard receiving touchdown, added another highlight with a punt-return touchdown at the 8:28 mark of the third quarter. The special-teams score pushed Pana’s advantage to 55-0.

Later in the third, Jayse Prather joined the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown run, sending the Panthers into the final quarter ahead 61-0.

Pana closed out its scoring with 3:37 remaining in the fourth quarter when Will Sarver broke free, made multiple defenders miss and took the ball all the way to the end zone. The final touchdown completed the Panthers’ 68-0 victory.

While the offense supplied plenty of highlights, the shutout was equally significant for Pana’s defense. Gillespie was unable to find the end zone at any point, while the Panthers consistently gave their offense opportunities to control the game.

The variety of contributors also stood out. Durbin and Ambrose each scored twice on the ground, while Campbell, Henschen, Prather and Sarver each added rushing touchdowns. Spracklen and Vaughn connected for the Panthers’ lone passing score, and Vaughn added the punt-return touchdown to finish with two different types of scores.

From beginning to end, it was a complete performance for Pana. The Panthers established their rushing attack early, created explosive plays through the air and on special teams, and finished the night with a defensive shutout.

With 68 unanswered points and nine different scoring plays, Pana left little doubt Friday night, turning an early advantage into a decisive 68-0 victory over Gillespie.
