It took all three sets and nearly every available point, but the Pawnee Indians found a way to finish.
Pawnee battled through a tightly contested varsity volleyball match against the North Greene Spartans on Wednesday night, ultimately coming away with a 2-1 victory. The Indians captured the opening set 26-24, dropped the second 19-25, and then prevailed in another 26-24 thriller in the decisive third set.
From the opening serve, there was little separating the two teams.
Pawnee and North Greene went back and forth throughout the first set, with neither side able to establish enough separation to put the other away. With the score extending beyond the traditional 25-point mark, the Indians delivered when the pressure was at its highest, securing the final two-point advantage for a 26-24 win.
North Greene responded in Set 2.
The Spartans found more success creating separation and forced Pawnee to play from behind. While the Indians continued to battle, North Greene maintained its advantage and eventually closed out a 25-19 victory, evening the match at one set apiece and forcing a decisive third.
The final set brought the same type of drama that defined the opener.
With the match on the line, Pawnee and North Greene again traded momentum in a set that remained close deep into the closing points. Neither team was willing to give the other much breathing room, setting up another finish that required extra points.
This time, Pawnee once again came through in the biggest moments.
The Indians secured the final points they needed to take the third set 26-24, ending a hard-fought night with a 2-1 match victory.
Pawnee’s stat sheet reflected a team effort throughout the three-set battle. Ashlyne was active across several areas, contributing at the service line and defensively while also recording kills and blocks. Jada contributed offensively at the net and provided a strong presence in the assist column, while Lilly was another key contributor in the attack and blocking game. Elisa also provided defensive contributions and helped Pawnee at the service line.
The Indians’ notes emphasized communication at the net, staying on their feet defensively and continuing to attack the ball — areas that became increasingly important as the match remained tight.
For North Greene, the Spartans’ ability to answer after losing a two-point opening set helped extend the match to three. But after more than two sets of back-and-forth volleyball, Pawnee found the final push it needed to escape with the victory.
In a match where the first and third sets were decided by the minimum two-point margin, the Indians showed their ability to perform under pressure and close out two crucial sets.
