Coach Thornton Brings New Energy as the Cardinals Look to Continue Their Winning Tradition
New coach. New system. New chapter.
That’s the story surrounding Warrensburg-Latham football as the Cardinals open the 2026 season under first-year head coach Coach Thornton. While the faces on the sidelines may be different, the expectations remain the same—compete every Friday night.
From the opening day of practice, the energy was evident. Players flew around the field, coaches were vocal, and the Cardinals looked eager to begin a new era.
“We’re going to be disciplined, we’re going to be smart, and we’re going to win some games,” Coach Thornton said after practice.
After 13 years of coaching in Florida and Illinois, including a stop at Normal West, Thornton believes those experiences have prepared him for his first head coaching opportunity.
Senior Leaders Ready to Step Up
Senior running back Jordan Branson knows leadership starts with effort.
“I’m just going 110 percent no matter what,” Branson said. “Leading by example and helping the younger guys.”
Branson hopes to surpass 600 rushing yards this season and believes the Cardinals have already developed strong chemistry.
“Everybody that’s had to step up has stepped up well, and we’ve bonded really well.”
Up front, senior Kaleb “KJB” Jackson Baker believes the offensive line will set the tone.
“I think we’re going to have to carry the team,” Baker said. “Especially with how Coach wants to run the football.”
Meanwhile, senior Brennon Bonds returns as one of the Cardinals’ biggest offensive weapons after leading the team in touchdowns last season.
“It’s great getting back out here,” Bonds said. “New team, new coaches, new environment—I’m ready for it.”
A Family Culture
One word continually surfaced throughout opening day: family.
Coach Thornton has emphasized building relationships as much as building football players.
“I’ve been driving back and forth from Bloomington to show these guys we’re invested in them,” Thornton said. “We care about them on and off the field.”
That message has already resonated with the players.
“The coaches have made it an easy transition,” Branson said.
Looking Ahead
The Cardinals return key pieces in Jordan Branson, Brennon Bonds, Joey Dominick, and Kaleb Jackson Baker, while Thornton brings an experienced coaching staff ready to establish its identity.
The new IHSA playoff format hasn’t changed the Cardinals’ mindset.
“We’re going out there to win every game we play,” Thornton said.

With experienced seniors, a physical offensive line, and a coaching staff built around discipline and family, Warrensburg-Latham believes it has the pieces to compete in the conference.
