Tri-City Falls to Sacred Heart-Griffin Despite Third-Inning Rally

The Tri-City TCSVMP Tornadoes battled throughout but ultimately fell 5-3 to Sacred Heart-Griffin in a competitive matchup that featured a pivotal early surge by the Cyclones and a spirited response from Tri-City in the middle innings.

Sacred Heart-Griffin seized control early, capitalizing on timely hitting and a few defensive miscues to build a 5-0 lead after the first inning. The Cyclones strung together multiple extra-base hits, including doubles that drove in runs and put immediate pressure on the Tornadoes.

Despite the early deficit, Tri-City showed resilience and began to chip away in the third inning. The Tornadoes broke through with a three-run rally sparked by aggressive baserunning and clutch hitting. Maebri Bender delivered a key two-RBI double, while Audrey Cooper and Ava Pulliam both crossed the plate during the inning to cut the deficit to 5-3.

From that point on, the game turned into a pitcher’s duel. Tri-City’s Lily Woodworth settled in after the first inning, delivering a strong performance in the circle. Woodworth went the distance, allowing seven hits and five runs (three earned) while striking out five and walking just one. She kept the Cyclones off the scoreboard over the final five innings, giving her team a chance to complete the comeback.

However, Sacred Heart-Griffin’s pitching proved equally effective. The Tornadoes were limited to just five hits on the night and were unable to generate additional scoring opportunities after the third inning. Strikeouts and well-timed defensive plays by the Cyclones halted Tri-City’s momentum in the later innings.

Offensively, Bender led the Tornadoes with a strong performance at the plate, finishing with a hit and two RBIs. Cooper, Ellie Cummins, Ava Pulliam, and Hayli Ferriell each contributed a hit, with Cummins and Pulliam also scoring runs.

Defensively, Tri-City showed flashes of solid play, highlighted by a double play that helped stop a potential rally. Despite the early error that led to an unearned run, the Tornadoes tightened up defensively as the game progressed.

In the end, Sacred Heart-Griffin’s early offensive burst proved to be the difference. While Tri-City demonstrated grit and the ability to respond under pressure, the Tornadoes were unable to overcome the first-inning deficit.

Tri-City will look to build on the positives from their mid-game rally and strong pitching performance as they prepare for their next matchup.
