The Meridian Hawks overcame an early deficit and held off a late Pawnee rally to earn an exciting 44-40 victory over the Indians on Saturday in a high-scoring matchup between two unbeaten teams.
Pawnee came out firing in the opening quarter, putting together two touchdown drives to take a 12-0 lead. Wort opened the scoring with a 41-yard touchdown run before Lederbrand connected with Seiz on a 44-yard touchdown pass to give the Indians early control.
Meridian answered in a big way in the second quarter. Seth Ralston got the Hawks on the board with a 6-yard touchdown run before Trenton Dowdy hauled in a 38-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Brown to put Meridian in front. Pawnee responded with a Lederbrand touchdown run and a 3-yard scoring pass to Polistina, but the Hawks continued to trade blows. Brown found Dowdy for a 2-yard touchdown, and Dowdy’s extra point gave Meridian a narrow 21-20 advantage at halftime.
The offensive fireworks continued after the break. Isaac Hanson extended the Hawks’ lead with a 2-yard touchdown run, but Pawnee refused to go away. Lederbrand connected with Greer on a 69-yard touchdown pass before finding Seiz for a 3-yard score to even the game at 28-28.
Meridian answered with two more touchdowns of its own. Brown connected with Cam Dean on a 13-yard scoring pass before Ralston added a 3-yard touchdown run, giving the Hawks a 36-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Hawks added to their advantage early in the final period when Brown found Dean for a 32-yard touchdown. Brown then connected with Ralston for another 3-yard touchdown, stretching Meridian’s lead to 44-28.
Pawnee made one final push, as Lederbrand connected with Polistina on a 5-yard touchdown pass before finding Seiz for a 6-yard score. The Indians continued to battle until the final whistle, but Meridian held on to secure the four-point victory.
Brown led the Hawks’ passing attack with multiple touchdown connections, while Dowdy, Dean and Ralston each found the end zone multiple times. Pawnee’s offense was equally explosive, with Lederbrand delivering several touchdown passes and Seiz providing a major scoring threat throughout the contest.
In a game filled with momentum swings and big plays, Meridian’s ability to answer Pawnee’s scoring drives proved to be the difference as the Hawks escaped with a 44-40 win.
