The Mt. Pulaski Hilltoppers used patience at the plate and timely hitting to power their way to an 11-10 victory over the Indians in a wild back-and-forth contest.
Despite recording just four hits on the afternoon, Mt. Pulaski capitalized on 14 walks, hit batters, sacrifice situations, and defensive miscues to manufacture offense and survive a late-game push from the Indians.
The Hilltoppers struck first in the opening inning. After Chase Roberts reached base after being hit by a pitch and later stole second, Luke Martin ripped an RBI double to center field to give Mt. Pulaski a 1-0 advantage. Aaron Volle followed later in the inning with an RBI single to left, extending the lead to 2-0.
Mt. Pulaski added another run in the second inning when Roberts lined a single to left field before eventually being thrown out on the bases to end the frame. Still, the Hilltoppers maintained momentum behind strong pitching from Carter Clark, who kept the Indians scoreless through the early innings.
The Indians finally broke through in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to tie the game at 4-4. Carson Contreras delivered an RBI single, while Carter Morell added a run-scoring double during the rally. The Indians appeared to seize control after carrying that momentum into the sixth inning.
However, the top of the sixth inning turned into the decisive stretch of the game.
Mt. Pulaski erupted for seven runs in the frame through a combination of patience and pressure on the basepaths. The Hilltoppers drew multiple walks, took advantage of errors, and consistently moved runners into scoring position. Chase Roberts drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, while Carter Clark reached on an error that plated another run. Wild pitches and additional free passes allowed Mt. Pulaski to quickly extend the lead to 11-4.
The Indians refused to go away quietly in the bottom half of the sixth.
After loading the bases with walks and singles, the Indians mounted a furious comeback attempt. Gavin Greer delivered a two-run single, and additional runs crossed following defensive miscues and patient at-bats. Mt. Pulaski turned to Preston Cowan and later Jaeden Jackson to help close the door as the Indians trimmed the deficit to just one run.
Jackson ultimately recorded the final out to preserve the dramatic 11-10 victory for the Hilltoppers.
Luke Martin led the offense for Mt. Pulaski, finishing 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Chase Roberts crossed the plate three times while adding an RBI, a stolen base, and two walks. Aaron Volle added two RBIs, while Tyler Cross and Carter Clark each drove in a run.
Clark earned the win on the mound, striking out five over 4.2 innings while allowing four earned runs. Cowan and Jackson combined to finish the game in relief.
The Hilltoppers showed resilience throughout the contest, overcoming late pressure and making the most of every offensive opportunity to secure the hard-fought win.
