The Heyworth Hornets established control early and continued to build on their advantage throughout Friday night’s varsity football matchup, defeating the Clinton Maroons 58-6 at Heyworth High School. The 58-6 final was also reported among Friday’s Illinois high school football results.
Heyworth wasted little time getting its offense going. With 6:31 remaining in the first quarter, Laesch broke free for a 64-yard touchdown run to give the Hornets a 7-0 advantage following the extra point. Laesch struck again late in the opening quarter, this time from 32 yards out, extending Heyworth’s lead to 14-0.
Clinton answered in the second quarter and found its biggest offensive play of the night. Cole Thomas connected with Kale Mock for a 44-yard touchdown, trimming the deficit to 14-6. The Maroons were unable to convert the two-point attempt, but the touchdown gave Clinton some momentum after Heyworth’s fast start.
The Hornets responded immediately.
On the ensuing kickoff, Heyworth returned the ball approximately 84 yards for a touchdown, quickly pushing the margin back to 21-6. From there, the Hornets continued to capitalize on explosive plays.
With 6:10 remaining in the second quarter, Troha connected with Strunk for a 12-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-6. Later in the quarter, Heyworth produced another major strike, with a roughly 90-yard touchdown completion to Laesch extending the advantage to 34-6.
Karr added a 27-yard field goal before halftime, sending Heyworth into the break with a commanding 37-6 lead.
Heyworth’s offense continued rolling after halftime. Godfrey scored on a six-yard touchdown run with 8:29 remaining in the third quarter, and another 20-yard touchdown reception followed less than a minute later. Both extra points were successful, increasing the Hornets’ advantage to 51-6.
The Hornets finished the night’s scoring in the fourth quarter when Cline broke through for a 31-yard touchdown run with 4:50 remaining, followed by the extra point to produce the 58-6 final.
For Clinton, the touchdown connection between Thomas and Mock provided the offensive highlight on a difficult night. The Maroons showed the ability to generate a big play through the air, but Heyworth’s combination of explosive rushing, passing and special-teams production made it difficult for Clinton to generate sustained momentum.
Heyworth ultimately found the end zone in a variety of ways, producing long touchdown runs, scoring through the air, returning a kickoff for a touchdown and adding a field goal. Laesch was at the center of several of the Hornets’ biggest plays, including two first-quarter rushing touchdowns and a long touchdown reception before halftime.
Clinton, meanwhile, will look to build from the flashes it showed offensively as the Maroons move forward. With players such as Thomas and Mock contributing to Clinton’s scoring drive, the Maroons will have an opportunity to regroup and continue developing as their schedule progresses.
