It was a full slate and a long trip south for the Taylorville Tornadoes on a mega night in Mattoon, with the girls tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the boys following at 7 p.m. The night featured plenty of energy, strong performances, and valuable momentum heading into the Christmas break.
The Taylorville girls set the tone early and never looked back. Behind a strong performance from McKynlee Siempelkamp, the Tornadoes came out firing, bringing intensity, excitement, and control on both ends of the floor. Taylorville handled business in comfortable fashion, pulling away for a 52-34 win to secure an important conference victory.
The Tornadoes’ fire and pace were evident throughout the night, as they used balanced offense and steady defense to build momentum that now carries them into the break. Taylorville will look to bring that same energy to the State Farm Classic next Friday, where a big-time matchup against Freeport awaits.
The boys contest that followed was a much tighter battle in a top conference matchup. Patrick Curtin delivered an impressive performance in his first varsity start, playing the post to perfection and providing a strong presence inside. Malique Pearse added an electric spark, using his speed and aggressiveness to attack the rim and keep pressure on the defense.
Taylorville battled throughout and built a 10-point lead, but was unable to close the door late. The Tornadoes ultimately fell 53-47, despite their effort and stretches of strong play on both ends.
While the loss stung, the Tornadoes showed toughness and defensive intensity. Moving forward, Taylorville will look to continue that defensive mindset, convert more scoring opportunities, and finish games as conference play continues.
