Maroons Make History: Clinton Girls Capture First-Ever Hoopla Championship

The Clinton Maroons girls basketball team delivered a statement win on Saturday night, knocking off the Tri-Valley Vikings 65-49 to capture the Hoopla Championship and secure the program’s first-ever in-season tournament title.

Clinton entered the championship matchup as the underdogs, having already fallen to Tri-Valley earlier in the season. But from the opening tip, it was clear the Maroons were determined to flip the script.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading baskets and momentum. Tri-Valley managed to rally late in the second quarter to take a narrow 28-23 lead into halftime. Clinton faced added adversity early, as leading scorers Carly Anderson and Avery Smith were both in foul trouble, limiting their minutes. Clara Dempsey showed pure grit, battling cramps throughout the first half yet continuing to push through and compete.

Coming out of the locker room, the Maroons brought a new level of energy and intensity. Clinton surged in the third quarter, reclaiming the lead and heading into the fourth up 43-40. With a championship on the line, it became a test of endurance, toughness, and execution.

That’s when Clinton’s leaders answered the call.

Clara Dempsey, Lilah Cluver, Avery Smith, and Carly Anderson took control, igniting the offense while locking down defensively. The Maroons exploded in the final quarter, capitalizing on key scoring opportunities and holding the Vikings to just six points over the final eight minutes. The result was a decisive 65-49 victory that sealed a historic championship.

Carly Anderson was named the Hoopla Tournament MVP, while Clara Dempsey and Lilah Cluver earned spots on the All-Tournament Team. The win highlighted Clinton’s depth and balance, as contributions came from across the roster in all facets of the game.

Head coach Josh Williams credited the team’s success to the challenges they faced early in the season. “Our tough early schedule prepared us for moments like this,” Williams said. “This group believes in each other, and tonight they showed what they’re capable of.”

With confidence soaring and momentum firmly on their side, the Maroons proved that heart, resilience, and teamwork can overcome any odds.
