Sages Rally Late, Outslug Bullets in 16-9 Win

The Monticello Varsity Sages put together an explosive offensive performance and erased an early deficit Saturday, storming past the Williamsville Varsity Bullets 16-9 in a high-scoring showdown.

After falling behind 3-0 in the opening inning and trailing 6-0 through the middle frames, Monticello never lost composure. The Sages erupted for six runs in the fourth inning to tie the game, then added two more in the fifth before delivering an eight-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.

Koyie Williams powered the Monticello offense with a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, two doubles, and six RBIs. Williams’ first homer came in the fourth inning, a three-run blast that instantly shifted momentum and tied the game at 6-6. He later launched a grand slam in the seventh to cap the comeback.

Grant Kiger also delivered a strong performance, finishing 3-for-4 with a Grand Slam, a double, and three RBIs. Jax Bailey added two hits, including a double, while Jake Motsegood collected two hits and an RBI. Colton Shubert scored three runs and added a hit, while Dawson Gaitros crossed the plate twice and reached base five times.

Monticello pounded out 14 hits and showed patience at the plate, drawing 11 walks.

On the mound, Matthias Rudolph started and battled through four innings before Dawson Gaitros took over in relief. Gaitros earned the win, tossing three innings while allowing three runs and striking out four.

The Sages struck out seven Bullets and overcame four defensive errors with timely hitting and resilience.

With the victory, Monticello showed the kind of firepower that can change a game in a hurry — and a refusal to quit after falling behind early.
