The Springfield Lucky Horseshoes scored twice over the final two innings and held off a late push from the Decatur Bean Ballers to secure a 5-4 victory in a tightly contested Prospect League matchup Friday night.
The game featured several momentum swings, with both teams trading leads before Springfield capitalized on key opportunities in the eighth and ninth innings to complete the comeback.
Decatur struck first in the opening frame despite not recording a hit. After reaching base and advancing into scoring position, catcher Gage Reynolds came around to score on an RBI groundout by Matthew Novominsky. The run was aided by a Springfield error, allowing the Bean Ballers to take a 1-0 lead.
Springfield answered in the bottom of the third inning. Dylan England crossed the plate on a passed ball, knotting the game at 1-1 and shifting momentum back toward the home side.
The Bean Ballers regained the lead in the fourth. Moises Febrillet reached base and eventually scored when Misael Maldonado lined an RBI single up the middle, putting Decatur back in front 2-1.
Springfield continued to battle and finally broke through in the sixth inning when Griffin Novacek launched a solo home run to right-center field. The blast, his first of the night, tied the game at 2-2 and energized the Lucky Horseshoes dugout.
The home team took its first lead an inning later. Lawson Alwan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Adrian Nina home and giving Springfield a 3-2 advantage heading into the late innings.
Decatur refused to go away. In the top of the eighth, Maldonado delivered the biggest swing of the night for the Bean Ballers, crushing a two-run homer to right-center field that scored Febrillet and put Decatur back on top 4-3.
The lead lasted only moments.
Springfield immediately answered in the bottom half of the inning. Adrian Nina came through with a clutch RBI double to center field, scoring Dylan England and tying the game at 4-4.
With the contest deadlocked entering the ninth, the Lucky Horseshoes delivered the decisive blow. England singled to right field, bringing home Ethan Burkhardt from third base and giving Springfield a walk-off 5-4 victory.
England played a pivotal role in the win, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored and the game-winning RBI. Nina added two hits, including the game-tying double, while Novacek contributed a home run and an RBI. Lawson Alwan collected two hits and drove in a run as Springfield totaled 11 hits on the evening.
The Bean Ballers were led offensively by Maldonado, who finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including the go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning. Moises Febrillet scored twice and recorded two hits, while Novominsky added an RBI.
Springfield’s bullpen proved to be the difference. After starter Richie Snider worked four innings, Knox Poston and winning pitcher Cash Clementi combined to allow just two runs over the final five frames. Clementi earned the victory after recording the final three outs.
Decatur starter Manuel Toro turned in a strong performance, striking out 10 over 5.1 innings while allowing just two runs. However, Springfield’s late offense against the bullpen ultimately proved enough to secure the one-run victory.
The back-and-forth contest featured three lead changes and remained undecided until the final at-bat, with the Lucky Horseshoes completing the late comeback to claim a thrilling 5-4 win over the Bean Ballers.
