The Rochester Rockets are headed back to Normal for their 10th state championship appearance, capping off a wild comeback and a bold overtime decision that secured a 43–42 victory over Breese Central on Saturday.
Rochester controlled the first half and entered the break leading 14–7, energized by a balanced offensive attack and strong defensive stands. But momentum swung sharply out of halftime.
Breese Central Erupts for 21 Unanswered
The third quarter belonged entirely to Breese Central. Capitalizing on short fields, defensive stops, and execution in the red zone, the Cougars ripped off 21 unanswered points, flipping the game and putting Rochester in a 28–14 hole. The Rockets struggled to move the chains and couldn’t halt Breese’s surge, leading to one of their toughest stretches of the season.
Rochester Digs Deep in the 4th
With their season on the line, the Rockets regrouped and stormed back in the fourth quarter. A momentum-shifting interception by Nate Swaney and fumble recovery by Connor Broughton set the tone, followed by a clutch touchdown from Tristan Stanton to pull Rochester back within striking distance. From there, Kaiden Stout took over on the ground, powering key late-drive yardage that helped the Rockets tie the game and force overtime after a disastrous third quarter.
Overtime Drama
Breese Central struck first in OT and elected to kick the extra point, going up 42–35. Rochester answered quickly with a touchdown of their own—then made the call that defined the night.
Rather than kicking to extend the game, the Rockets lined up for two. With the season on the line, the gamble paid off, as Rochester converted and walked off with a 43–42 victory.
A gutsy call. A massive comeback. A ticket punched to the title game.
What It Means
