The Pawnee Indians couldn’t have asked for a much stronger start, putting together an explosive offensive performance while shutting down Unity Christian on the other side of the ball en route to a 54-0 victory in 8-man football action.
Pawnee scored through the air, on the ground and on defense, building a 38-point advantage before halftime and eventually forcing a running clock in the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Ty Lederbrand helped lead an Indians offense that consistently produced big plays, while Jace Jankousky made his presence felt on both sides of the football.
Pawnee wasted little time getting started.
With 9:19 remaining in the opening quarter, the Indians faced fourth down when Lederbrand went to the air and connected with Torsten Polistina for a long touchdown pass. Pawnee converted the ensuing two-point attempt to grab an 8-0 advantage.
The Indians returned to the end zone with 2:11 remaining in the first when Lederbrand kept the football and ran it in for a touchdown. The two-point attempt was unsuccessful, but Pawnee’s advantage had grown to 14-0.
The passing attack struck again almost immediately after the second quarter began.
With 11:46 on the clock, Jankousky hauled in a long touchdown pass, and Pawnee added another successful two-point conversion to extend the lead to 22-0.
Then the Indians’ defense got involved.
Just 12 seconds later, Pawnee stripped the football away from the Lions and recovered the fumble, giving possession right back to an offense that had already found its rhythm.
Pawnee continued to capitalize.
Gavin Greer became the next target to break free through the Unity Christian defense, hauling in another long touchdown pass with 6:17 remaining in the second quarter. A successful two-point conversion pushed the Indians’ advantage to 30-0.
Before halftime, Pawnee added another score on the ground.
With 46.2 seconds remaining, Hudson Wart ran the football into the end zone. Wart then converted the two-point attempt himself, sending the Indians into halftime holding a commanding 38-0 lead.
Little changed after the break.
Jankousky found the end zone for the second time offensively with 8:40 remaining in the third quarter, once again hauling in a long touchdown pass. Pawnee converted the two-point attempt to stretch the advantage to 46-0.
By the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Indians’ lead had resulted in a running clock.
Even then, Pawnee’s defense wasn’t finished.
With 7:15 remaining, Jankousky stepped in front of a Unity Christian pass and took the interception all the way back for a pick-six. Another successful two-point conversion brought the score to 54-0 and put the finishing touches on the Indians’ dominant performance.
Jankousky’s night was particularly impactful. The Pawnee playmaker accounted for three touchdowns in two different phases of the game, catching two touchdown passes before adding the interception return for a score in the fourth quarter.
Lederbrand helped orchestrate the offensive attack from quarterback, contributing through both the air and on the ground. Polistina and Greer each hauled in touchdown passes, while Wart contributed a rushing score as Pawnee spread the production throughout its lineup.
The Indians were equally effective defensively. Pawnee forced a fumble and recovered it early in the second quarter, later added Jankousky’s interception return and, most importantly, kept the Lions off the scoreboard for the entire game.
For Coach Talley’s Indians, the result was a complete performance. Pawnee established control early, built a 38-0 halftime advantage and never allowed Unity Christian an opportunity to work its way back into the contest.
By the final whistle, the Indians had touchdowns through the air, on the ground and on defense to go along with a shutout, completing a convincing 54-0 victory over the Unity Christian Lions.
