The Pawnee Indians put together a strong performance on their home floor Tuesday night, defeating the Springfield Calvary Saints in straight sets, 25-18, 27-25, in conference action. The matchup was scheduled as a conference contest at Pawnee.
Pawnee established the early advantage with a solid opening set. The Indians were able to create enough separation from Calvary to take the first frame 25-18, putting themselves one set away from the victory.
The second set, however, proved much more difficult.
Calvary responded to its opening-set loss and pushed Pawnee throughout a tightly contested frame. Neither side was able to put the set away at the traditional 25-point mark, forcing the teams into extra points with the Saints looking to extend the match to a deciding third set.
Pawnee ultimately delivered when it mattered most. The Indians secured the final two-point advantage for a 27-25 victory, finishing off the match in straight sets.
While individual statistics were not available from the match, the two sets showed different strengths from Pawnee. The Indians created a more comfortable margin in the opener before demonstrating their ability to finish a close set under pressure in the second.
Calvary, meanwhile, showed plenty of fight after falling behind in the match. The Saints entered Tuesday with several players contributing throughout the season, including Kali Netherton, Sophia McQuillan and Addelyn Kendall, though match-specific statistics against Pawnee were not available.
For Pawnee, the victory provided a strong finish to a competitive night. The Indians were challenged considerably more in the second set, but instead of allowing Calvary to force a third, Pawnee held its ground and completed the sweep.
