Monticello used a big middle inning and a late insurance run to pull away from GCMS for a 6-3 victory.
The Sages struck first in the opening inning when Jax Bailey lined a single to center, bringing home Jake Motsegood and Koyie Williams to take a 2-0 lead.
GCMS answered in the fourth with its best offensive stretch of the game. After Zeb Greer drove in a run with a single, White followed with a clutch two-run single to center, scoring Greer and Heinz to give GCMS a 3-2 advantage.
Monticello quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning. Grant Kiger delivered the big swing, launching a two-run home run to put the Sages back in front 4-3. Later in the inning, Koyie Williams added a sacrifice fly to bring in another run, extending the lead to 5-3.
The Sages added an insurance run in the sixth when Dawson Gaitros doubled to left field, scoring Forrest Rawdin to make it 6-3.
On the mound, Monticello got a strong combined effort from Heyden Romano and Zeke Young. Young earned the win in relief, helping hold GCMS to just four hits while striking out five. GCMS pitchers Heinz and Kaeding combined for six strikeouts but were unable to slow Monticello’s timely hitting.
