The Clinton Varsity Maroons battled throughout but ultimately fell short in a 7-4 contest against St. Teresa, as a decisive third inning from the visitors proved to be the difference.
Clinton showed early resilience, responding after St. Teresa struck first in the opening frame. The Maroons capitalized on defensive pressure in the bottom of the first, using an error to plate a run and keep the game within reach. Moments later, Clinton added another run on a groundout, tying the game at 2-2 and setting the tone for a competitive matchup.
St. Teresa, however, delivered the game’s pivotal moment in the top of the third inning. A string of timely hits and disciplined at-bats led to a four-run outburst, turning a tight contest into a 7-2 advantage. Key contributions included RBI singles and productive situational hitting that kept Clinton’s defense under constant pressure.
Despite the deficit, Clinton refused to fold. The Maroons chipped away in the middle innings, highlighted by a run-scoring groundout from Laney Brewer in the third that brought Jaelynn Thomas across the plate. In the fourth inning, Clinton added another run when Riley Fentress scored on a dropped third strike, trimming the lead to 7-4.
Offensively, Clinton was led by Jaelynn Thomas, Avery Smith, and Riley Fentress, each collecting hits. Fentress and Brewer each drove in a run, while the Maroons showed patience at the plate and opportunistic baserunning throughout the game.
In the circle, Aliviyah Haynes started for Clinton, striking out seven over three innings of work. Campbell Bass provided strong relief, tossing four innings while allowing just one hit and striking out nine, giving the Maroons a chance to mount a comeback late.
However, Clinton was unable to break through in the final innings, as St. Teresa’s defense held firm to secure the victory.
While the result didn’t fall in their favor, the Maroons demonstrated grit and determination, particularly in their ability to respond to adversity and stay within striking distance. Clinton will look to build on those positives as they continue their season.
