Central A&M Raiders Fall in Regional Playoff Battle Against Altamont

The Central A&M Raiders saw their postseason run come to a close in a hard-fought regional playoff matchup against the Altamont Lady Indians, falling 5-2 in a game filled with momentum swings and competitive at-bats.

Central A&M struck first in the opening inning and appeared poised to seize early control. Riley Hazelwonder ignited the offense with a double to center field after Kayla McPeek reached base and Callie Robertson worked a walk. Moments later, Brooklyn Jackson drew another walk that allowed Hazelwonder to score, giving the Raiders an early 1-0 advantage.

The Raiders continued to pressure Altamont pitcher Sophia Long throughout the game by consistently working deep counts and forcing traffic on the bases. Central A&M finished with six walks and five hits on the evening.

Riley Hazelwonder battled through the first several innings inside the circle for the Raiders. She worked out of trouble in the first inning with back-to-back strikeouts and stranded multiple runners during the second and third innings to preserve the lead.

Altamont finally broke through in the fourth inning after capitalizing on a defensive error and a key triple from Avery Fleeharty that tied the game at 1-1. Riley Hazelwonder responded by striking out the next two batters to prevent further damage and keep the game even.

The Lady Indians took control in the top of the fifth inning. Altamont loaded the bases with a combination of singles and defensive pressure before pushing across another run on a groundout to move ahead 2-1. A triple later in the inning added additional pressure as the Raiders found themselves trailing heading into the late innings.

Altamont extended the lead even further during the sixth inning. Timely singles from Adilyn Schnarre, Sophia Long, and Cecilia Pearcy helped plate three more runs and gave the Lady Indians a 5-1 cushion.

Despite the deficit, Central A&M continued to fight in the bottom of the sixth. Olivia Kerby delivered a clutch RBI single to right field that scored Brooklyn Jackson and cut the deficit to 5-2. Wesleigh Cochran followed with another base hit to keep the inning alive, but Altamont pitcher Sophia Long escaped further trouble to preserve the lead.

Olivia Kerby led the Raiders offensively, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Riley Hazelwonder added a double and scored a run, while Kayla McPeek and Wesleigh Cochran each recorded hits. Brooklyn Jackson also crossed the plate once for Central A&M.

Inside the circle, Hazelwonder struck out nine batters across 5.2 innings of work before Callie Robertson entered in relief and recorded another strikeout.

Although the season ended in regional play, the Raiders showed resilience throughout the contest and continued battling until the final out against a tough Altamont squad.
