The Clinton Maroons were looking to bounce back after a tight loss to the St. Teresa Bulldogs, while the Decatur MacArthur Generals aimed to respond following a tough matchup against Springfield High. The Maroons traveled to Decatur for an intense showdown on the Generals’ Pink Night, which brought out a great crowd and plenty of support.
MacArthur came out firing in the opening set, as Trinitee Sutton and Zahnya Gibbs made their presence felt with key kills and blocks to help the Generals take the first set, 25-17.
Clinton refused to back down in the second set. Karlie Bless and Lainey Snow stepped up for the Maroons, with Bless delivering several kills and Snow recording two big-time blocks to give the Generals plenty of trouble.
The third set brought more back-and-forth action, with neither team willing to give an inch. However, MacArthur pulled away late to secure a 25-22 victory in the deciding set, earning its 10th win of the season.
Following the win, Jack Hart of ILSportsWire caught up with MacArthur head coach Tony Holly and standout Trinitee Sutton to discuss the victory, the team’s chemistry, and preparations for the postseason.
Holly described the win as a weight lifted off his shoulders after a challenging stretch against tough opponents. Coming off the previous night’s game against Springfield High, the Generals focused on learning from their mistakes and applying those lessons against Clinton.
“You always have to play the team in front of you,” Holly explained, noting that his team took what it learned the night before and used it to get the job done against another tough opponent.
The coach also praised the depth of his young squad, highlighting the contributions of seniors Aaliyah Turner and Zahnya Gibbs. Turner stepped up in a key serve-receive rotation, while Gibbs continued to provide valuable defensive contributions. Holly added that the team’s chemistry and enjoyment of the game have continued to grow during his second season at the helm.
With the postseason approaching, MacArthur already knows it will face Charleston in the opening round. Holly acknowledged the challenge ahead, emphasizing that his team must be prepared for a tough matchup and understand that any opponent can be dangerous on a given night.
Sutton shared similar sentiments, crediting communication, energy, and teamwork for the Generals’ ability to respond after dropping the second set.
“We have to keep on reminding ourselves to play together, talk, and push,” Sutton said. “Although we did get down in that second set, we came back in the third. I’m just so proud of my team.”
Sutton also emphasized the importance of team chemistry as the Generals prepare for the playoffs, noting that the team continues to encourage one another through mistakes while working hard in practice to improve.
With two regular-season games remaining, MacArthur hopes to carry its momentum into the postseason, while Clinton looks to get back in the win column tomorrow against Central A&M.
