UIS Shootout Provides Early Look at Central Illinois Girls Basketball Talent

The University of Illinois Springfield served as the host site for a busy day of summer basketball on Saturday, June 12, as numerous girls basketball programs from across Central Illinois gathered for the UIS Girls Basketball Shootout.

Programs including Rochester, Pana, Mt. Zion, Central A&M/Okaw Valley, Glenwood, Decatur MacArthur, Springfield High, Lanphier, Lincoln, Southeast, MidPro, and Edwardsville all participated in the event, with several teams playing multiple games throughout the day.

Action began at 9 a.m. and continued into the afternoon, with three courts operating simultaneously inside the UIS facilities. The format allowed multiple games to be played at once while providing athletes and coaches an opportunity to evaluate lineups, develop chemistry, and gain valuable experience during the offseason.

The shootout featured modified summer rules, including 18-minute halves and a running clock, helping keep the games moving while maximizing playing opportunities for all participating teams. Varsity and junior varsity squads both saw action throughout the day, with some JV teams facing varsity competition in a challenging but valuable learning environment.

While summer basketball often focuses on development rather than results, the intensity on the court suggested that many teams are already preparing for the demands of the upcoming winter season. Physical defense, aggressive rebounding, and fast-paced transition play highlighted the day’s action as players competed with energy from the opening tip until the final buzzer.

One of the day’s most exciting contests came between Glenwood and Mt. Zion, with Mt. Zion escaping with a 26-24 overtime victory. The extra-session thriller showcased the competitive nature of the event and set the tone for a day filled with close battles.

Rochester opened its day with a strong 57-24 victory over the Pana junior varsity squad before later falling to Lincoln, 45-25. Pana’s varsity team was involved in several competitive matchups throughout the shootout, including a 41-35 loss to Glenwood, a 51-42 contest against Springfield High, and a heartbreaking 51-49 defeat against Southeast.

Elsewhere, MidPro’s junior varsity squad earned a 60-31 victory over Central A&M/Okaw Valley in one of the day’s more decisive outcomes.

Beyond the scores, the event offered fans an early glimpse at what may be in store for the upcoming basketball season. Numerous games featured lead changes, momentum swings, and tightly contested finishes that kept players, coaches, and spectators engaged throughout the day.

Whether holding a first-half advantage, battling back from a deficit, or trading baskets in the closing minutes, teams competed with determination and intensity from start to finish. The physical style of play and competitive atmosphere reflected the commitment many programs have already made during the offseason.

By the conclusion of the final games around 2 p.m., players, coaches, and families departed with valuable experience and plenty of optimism heading into the months ahead.

If Saturday’s performances were any indication, Central Illinois girls basketball fans have plenty to look forward to when the regular season tips off this winter.
