Spartans Shut Out Sages, Hand Monticello First Loss

The highly anticipated matchup between two undefeated teams lived up to the hype early, but it was St. Joseph-Ogden who took control and never looked back, defeating Monticello 7-0 on Wednesday. The loss marks Monticello’s first of the season, while the Spartans continue to prove why they’re ranked among the top teams in Illinois.

St. Joseph-Ogden wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning. Trevor Ames delivered an RBI single to score Will Haley and give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

The Spartans added on in the second when Cam Schluter launched a solo home run to right, extending the lead to 2-0.

The game broke open in the third inning. Bryson Houchens drove in a run with a single, Finn Miller reached on an error that brought in another, and a wild pitch allowed Trevor Ames to score. Kodey McKinney later worked a walk to push the lead to 5-0.

St. Joseph-Ogden capped off the scoring in the fourth. Ames came through again with an RBI single, and another run crossed on a passed ball to make it 7-0.

On the mound, Asher Pruemer was dominant. He tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just six hits while striking out eight and walking only one.

Monticello had opportunities but couldn’t capitalize, finishing with six hits but no runs against the Spartans’ ace.
