Bean Ballers Defeat Lucky Horseshoes 7-3 in “Battle of I-72” Showdown

The latest chapter of the “Battle of I-72” belonged to the Decatur Bean Ballers on Tuesday night as they used timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and a dominant outing from their pitching staff to earn a 7-3 victory over the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes.

While the final score favored Decatur, both clubs had their moments throughout the contest. The Bean Ballers capitalized on scoring opportunities early, while the Lucky Horseshoes battled back midway through the game before ultimately being unable to overcome Decatur’s balanced offensive attack.

Bean Ballers Strike First

Decatur manufactured the game’s first run in the bottom of the second inning.

After Keegan Farnaus advanced into scoring position, Gage Reynolds lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Farnaus to score and give the Bean Ballers a 1-0 lead. Moments later, Caleb Crider crossed the plate on a balk, extending the advantage to 2-0.

The Bean Ballers continued to apply pressure in the fourth inning.

With a runner aboard, Matthew Novominsky delivered the biggest swing of the night, launching a two-run home run to right field. The blast scored Reynolds and pushed the Decatur lead to 4-0.

Later in the inning, Carder Reich added an RBI single to left field, scoring Brandon Abernathy and increasing the lead to 5-0.

Horseshoes Respond

The Lucky Horseshoes refused to go quietly and found a spark in the fifth inning.

After reaching base, Adrian Nina came home on a successful double-steal sequence as Kannon Kirk swiped second base, putting Springfield on the board and trimming the deficit to 5-1.

Springfield added another run in the sixth inning when Trey Blanchette worked a bases-loaded walk, forcing home Kannon Kirk and making it a three-run game.

The Lucky Horseshoes continued to create traffic on the bases throughout the evening, drawing six walks and stealing four bases. Nina, Kirk, Griffin Novacek, and AJ Keely all recorded stolen bases as Springfield attempted to chip away at the Decatur lead.

Decatur Answers Back

Any momentum Springfield gained was quickly answered by the Bean Ballers in the bottom half of the sixth.

With runners on base, Caleb Crider lined an RBI single through the right side, bringing home Reich to restore a four-run cushion at 6-2.

Later in the inning, Novominsky added another RBI with a sacrifice fly, scoring Crider and extending the lead to 7-2.

Springfield managed one final run in the seventh inning when Kannon Kirk lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring AJ Keely and cutting the deficit to 7-3. However, the Horseshoes could get no closer.

Strong Night on the Mound

The Bean Ballers received another impressive start from Nathan Trimble, who earned the victory after throwing five scoreless innings. Trimble allowed just one hit while striking out four and walking two, keeping Springfield’s lineup off balance throughout his outing.

The bullpen faced more pressure as the Horseshoes mounted their comeback attempt. Baron Odam, Bruno Banuelos, and Jackson Snitko combined to finish the game, preserving the Decatur victory despite Springfield’s late push.

For Springfield, starter Cobe Ross battled through 2.2 innings before giving way to the bullpen. Nick Sullivan and Tadeáš Kalcev combined to keep the Horseshoes within striking distance, allowing the offense opportunities to rally in the middle innings.

Offensive Leaders

Decatur collected 12 hits in the victory and received contributions throughout the lineup.

Novominsky led the way, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Jackson Snitko and Keegan Farnaus each recorded three hits, while Crider scored twice and drove in a run. Reich added an RBI hit, and Reynolds contributed a sacrifice fly and scored a run.

Springfield was limited to three hits but made the most of its opportunities. Kirk scored once and drove in a run, while Blanchette collected an RBI and Novacek reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
