Nokomis Takes 8-2 Victory Against Mt Pulaski in the Final Inning

On Thursday, March 19, the Mt. Pulaski Hilltoppers hosted the Nokomis Redskins at Veterans Park in a season-opening matchup for Mt. Pulaski and the second game of the year for Nokomis.

The Redskins entered the contest looking to rebound after a season-opening loss to Staunton, while the Hilltoppers were eager to begin their season on a strong note. What followed was a tightly contested game that ultimately turned dramatically in the final inning.

Innings 1–3: Pitchers Set the Tone

Mt. Pulaski took the field first with Jaeden Jackson on the mound, and the Hilltoppers’ defense delivered a strong opening inning, recording a strikeout, a pop-out to right field, and a groundout to first.

Nokomis starter Levi German matched that effort. Despite some early baserunners and solid contact from Mt. Pulaski, neither team was able to generate offense in the first inning.

The defensive battle continued through the second. Nokomis was unable to capitalize at the plate, while Mt. Pulaski showed promise when Reed Martin reached base. Martin found himself in a rundown after a pickoff attempt but managed to advance to second following a defensive miscue. The opportunity, however, went unfinished as the inning ended scoreless.

In the third, both teams remained locked in. Nokomis was retired on two groundouts and a strikeout, while Mt. Pulaski recorded its first hit of the season—a single to center field. A potential scoring opportunity was erased by a well-executed double play from the Redskins, keeping the game tied at 0–0.

Innings 4–6: Teams Trade Momentum

The stalemate was broken in the fourth inning when Nokomis capitalized on baserunners and pushed across the game’s first run to take a 1–0 lead.

Mt. Pulaski looked to respond but was held in check by Nokomis’ defense, which recorded two quick outs on a grounder and a lineout before ending the inning with a strikeout.

Both teams continued to battle defensively in the fifth inning. Nokomis was retired on a series of pop-ups and a strikeout, while Mt. Pulaski was unable to break through despite solid contact, including a diving catch in the outfield by Nokomis’ Kannon Jonas to preserve the lead.

In the sixth inning, Nokomis was again held scoreless, opening the door for Mt. Pulaski. The Hilltoppers took advantage, stringing together hits and timely baserunning to score two runs and take a 2–1 lead heading into the final inning.

7th Inning: Nokomis Erupts Late

Needing just three outs to secure the win, Mt. Pulaski entered the seventh inning in control. However, Nokomis had other plans.

The Redskins delivered a decisive offensive surge, stringing together multiple hits and capitalizing on scoring opportunities. By the end of the inning, Nokomis had plated seven runs, turning a one-run deficit into a commanding 8–2 lead.

Mt. Pulaski was unable to respond in the bottom half of the inning, as Nokomis closed out the game to complete the comeback victory. Final Score: 8-2, Nokomis Wins.

Nokomis secures its first win of the season in dramatic fashion, bouncing back with a dominant seventh-inning rally. Mt. Pulaski, meanwhile, showed strong defensive play early but was unable to hold off the late surge in its season opener.
