The rafters were truly rumbling Friday night at Rochester High School as the Rochester Rockets and their longtime rivals, the SHG Cyclones, squared off in a high-energy showdown that kept everyone on the edge of their seats from tip-off to the final buzzer.
On January 9th at 7 p.m., the atmosphere inside the gym felt like a playoff game. Fans from both sides packed the stands, bringing nonstop noise and emotion as two physical, defensive-minded teams battled for all four quarters. Every possession mattered, and no one in the building felt comfortable until the final seconds ticked away.
First Half
Rochester controlled the opening moments, winning the tip and jumping out to an early 6–8 point lead by the end of the first quarter. The Rockets played with urgency, attacking on both ends of the floor as if the season were on the line. SHG, however, quickly answered the challenge. The Cyclones turned up their defensive pressure in the second quarter, forcing turnovers and disrupting Rochester’s rhythm.
That intensity paid off. SHG’s aggressive defense sparked a run that allowed them to take control of the game, and just before halftime the Cyclones knocked down a three-pointer to extend their advantage. The shot sent SHG into the locker room with a 9-point lead and all the momentum.
Second Half
Rochester came out of halftime determined to change the tone. The Rockets increased their defensive pressure, but the physical play led to SHG earning trips to the free-throw line, adding crucial points that made the comeback even more difficult. Realizing they needed a different approach, Rochester adjusted, shifting their focus to ball movement and offensive execution.
Midway through the third quarter, the Rockets began sharing the ball and finding open shooters. The improved spacing led to several key three-pointers and easy looks, slowly chipping away at the Cyclones’ lead. By the start of the fourth quarter, Rochester had battled back to within six.
The final quarter was nothing short of electric. With SHG continuing to play aggressively, the Rockets capitalized at the free-throw line and in transition. Each possession drew louder reactions from the crowd as the gap closed. Then, with just 30 seconds remaining and Rochester trailing by one, the Rockets pushed the pace and converted a clutch layup to take a one-point lead. The gym erupted as the tension reached its peak.
SHG was forced to foul in the closing moments, sending Rochester to the line. Calm under pressure, the Rockets knocked down their free throws to seal the victory. When the final buzzer sounded, Rochester had secured a thrilling 63–61 win, sending the home crowd into celebration and proving once again why this rivalry always delivers unforgettable moments.
