On Wednesday evening, March 18, the Taylorville Tornadoes opened their 2026 season with a 10–8 victory over the Okaw Valley Timberwolves at Okaw Valley High School.
Both teams entered the matchup eager to begin the season on a strong note, and the game quickly developed into a competitive back-and-forth contest.
Innings 1–3: Early Momentum Swings
Taylorville, batting as the visiting team, wasted no time setting the tone. In the top of the first inning, Colton Gatton led off with a deep hit to left field for a single, signaling early offensive intent. Despite the strong start, the Tornadoes were unable to bring him home.
Okaw Valley capitalized in the bottom half of the inning. With runners on base, a ground ball to first led to an attempted double play, but an errant throw to second resulted in an error, allowing the Timberwolves to score and take a 1–0 lead.
The Tornadoes responded in the second inning with a surge at the plate. With multiple runners aboard, Maxx Grieme delivered a key double to deep center field, driving in two runs and helping Taylorville take a 4–1 advantage.
However, Okaw Valley answered quickly. After tying the game at 4–4, Wyatt Bell launched a two-run home run over the left-field fence, giving the Timberwolves a 6–4 lead.
Taylorville chipped away in the third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Blake Ladage grounded out to second base but recorded an RBI, narrowing the score to 6–5. Okaw Valley held the lead through three innings.
Innings 4–6: Taylorville Regains Control
The fourth inning proved pivotal for Taylorville. RBI hits from Maxx Grieme and Kason Pembroke allowed the Tornadoes to reclaim the lead at 7–6. Later in the inning, Zaydyn Donaldson added another run with an RBI single, extending the advantage to 8–6.
Taylorville continued to build momentum in the fifth inning. With a runner on third, Grieme delivered the game’s biggest offensive highlight—a home run over the left-field fence—pushing the Tornadoes’ lead to 10–6.
Okaw Valley continued to battle but struggled to convert opportunities into runs against Taylorville’s pitching and defense.
In the sixth inning, the Timberwolves mounted a comeback effort, scoring two runs to cut the deficit to 10–8. The rally was halted by a standout defensive play from Isaac Repchser, who caught a pop-up in center field and fired a precise throw to home plate to catch a runner attempting to score, ending the inning with a double play.
7th Inning: Closing It Out
Taylorville was unable to add insurance runs in the top of the seventh, leaving the door open for Okaw Valley. However, the Tornadoes’ defense held firm in the final inning, preventing any further scoring and securing the win. Taylorville took the victory with a Final Score of 10-8.
