Tornadoes Dominate in Pana, Claim Coal Miners Trophy with 57–42 Win

The long-standing rivalry between the Taylorville Tornadoes and the Pana Panthers delivered another electric chapter Friday night, as the Tornadoes stormed into Pana and walked away with the Coal Miners Trophy following a 57–42 victory.

With the historic trophy on the line, the atmosphere inside the gym lived up to the hype. Taylorville’s “Purple Reign” packed a full section, while Pana supporters filled the home side, creating a playoff-like environment that felt bigger than a regular-season matchup.

Taylorville wasted no time setting the tone, jumping out to a 9–0 lead and never looking back. Fueled by urgency and motivation after dropping five straight games, the Tornadoes played with confidence and intensity from the opening tip.

Pana found its footing in the second quarter, leaning on Cash Lynch, who consistently attacked the rim and earned trips to the free-throw line. Still, Taylorville responded behind the balanced scoring of Brock Brown and Blake Ladage, who were effective both inside and from the perimeter. The Tornadoes carried a 24–20 advantage into halftime.

Defense proved to be the difference in the second half. Taylorville’s full-court press and disciplined zone clogged the paint and made life difficult for Lynch and Madyx Angel, limiting their driving opportunities. Pana, a team known for its three-point shooting, struggled to find rhythm from deep as shots refused to fall.

The Tornadoes steadily built separation and pushed the lead to double digits in the fourth quarter. After battling foul trouble most of the night, Malique Pearse delivered the dagger—knocking down a clutch three-pointer before finishing a strong drive to the basket to seal the win.

Taylorville closed out the game with poise, securing a 57–42 victory and reclaiming the Coal Miners Trophy, a prize that continues to symbolize pride, history, and bragging rights between the two programs.

For the Tornadoes, it was a statement win—and a reminder that rivalry nights have a way of bringing out their best.
