The Taylorville Tornadoes hit the road Friday night and delivered a dominant performance against the Mattoon Green Wave, earning a 36-7 victory to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Taylorville got on the board first in the opening quarter when Ben Peabody connected on a 30-yard field goal to give the Tornadoes a 3-0 advantage.
The Tornadoes began to find their rhythm in the second quarter. Isaac Repscher powered his way into the end zone on a 1-yard rushing touchdown before Kade Guhlstorf added a 4-yard touchdown run, pushing Taylorville’s lead to 17-0 heading into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Tornadoes’ offense exploded.
Repscher connected with Blake Ladage on a 63-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 22-0. Repscher then found Maddex Havera for a 6-yard touchdown, putting Taylorville firmly in control at 29-0.
With the game in hand, Taylorville continued to get younger players valuable experience. James May entered at quarterback and connected with Havera for another touchdown with 7:55 remaining.
Mattoon eventually got on the scoreboard with a touchdown from Memphys Hall, but Taylorville had already established complete control of the contest.
Following the game, Taylorville head coach Jeb Odam praised his team’s execution and the number of players who stepped up with big plays.
“We had a lot of guys make some plays in some crucial situations that we were kind of waiting to break out for this year, and they finally did,” Odam said. “So hopefully we can carry that momentum into Charleston.”
Odam also highlighted the excitement surrounding Taylorville’s younger players while emphasizing the importance of the senior class finishing the season strong.
“The future’s bright for Taylorville football,” Odam said. “But the seniors, there’s 20 of them. We want to see those guys finish out strong and make a run deep into the playoffs.”
The Tornadoes’ success Friday night was also fueled by their physical play in the trenches.
Taylorville center Thor Shanks and defensive lineman Connor Hunsley both pointed to the team’s preparation throughout the week as a major reason for the strong performance.
“We’ve been great in our fundamentals in practice,” Hunsley said. “We’ve been sharpening all of our skills, making sure that we’re ready for the next battle.”
Shanks said the team has continued to focus on aggressiveness, execution and knowing its assignments.
With Charleston waiting next week, the Tornadoes know the challenge will only get tougher.
“We’ve got to go 5-2 before we can go 7-2,” Shanks said, emphasizing the team’s one-game-at-a-time mentality.
Taylorville will now turn its attention toward Charleston next Friday night, looking to improve to 5-2 and continue building momentum as the regular season moves toward the postseason.
