The wait is finally over.
Taylorville football officially returned to the field Thursday night as the Tornadoes hosted their annual Purple & Gold Scrimmage, giving players, coaches and the community their first opportunity to see the 2026 team in action.
This year’s scrimmage came a week earlier than it has in the past, taking place on August 14, and the Taylorville community made sure it felt like the beginning of something special.
The stands were filled with familiar purple and gold, while Taylorville JFL football players and cheerleaders were also on hand to perform in front of the home crowd. From the youth level to the varsity program, it was a night that showcased just how much football means to the Taylorville community.
And for the varsity Tornadoes, it simply felt good to be back on the field.
Taylorville arrived in style, sporting their new T-Ville helmets as the team begins its push toward the 2026 season. While Thursday night’s scrimmage did not count in the standings, there were plenty of encouraging moments on both sides of the football.
Head coach Jeb Odam said the team has put together a strong summer and believes the Tornadoes are in a good position heading into Week 1.
“We had a really strong summer both on the field and off the field,” Odam said. “We had a good camp so far.”
Odam also acknowledged that the scrimmage came with some adversity, including an injury to one of the team’s players. Still, he was proud of how his team handled the night.
“They played hard, went through all the rigmarole of a scrimmage game,” Odam said. “Proud of them and we’re excited where we’re at.”
One of the biggest questions surrounding Taylorville heading into the season is the status of quarterback Isaac Repscher, who did not participate in the scrimmage.
Odam said Repscher remains day-to-day and that the coaching staff will continue working with him as they prepare for the regular-season opener.
“We’ll take care of him as much as we can and get him ready to go,” Odam said.
One of the biggest strengths of this year’s Tornadoes could be the experience and chemistry within the senior class. Taylorville has approximately 20 seniors on the roster, and Odam believes their attitude could be one of the team’s biggest assets.
“One word, they’re fun to be around,” Odam said. “We haven’t had a single issue with them on and off the field. Lots of smiles in the locker room, lots of smiles when we travel. Just a really, really fun and encouraging group to be around.”
There were plenty of bright spots during the scrimmage.
Odam pointed to a 47-yard field goal as one of the highlights of the evening, along with big plays offensively and several strong defensive tackles.
But just as important as the positives was the opportunity to identify what needs to improve before Week 1.
“We’ll watch it in the morning. We’ll find lots of things we need to fix and clean up,” Odam said. “Just in every, all three facets of the game.”
The Tornadoes now turn their attention toward the regular season and their home opener next Friday night against Richland County.
The anticipation around Taylorville is already building.
Week 1 brings a new season, a new opportunity and another chance for the Tornadoes to defend their home turf in front of one of the area’s most passionate football communities.
And that community was on full display Thursday night.
Odam emphasized how much the support from Taylorville means to his program, from the families and fans to the fundraising efforts and the youth programs that help build the foundation for the future.
“When you walk in the gates and we’ve got Tornado Alley and all of our posters up with the cheerleaders, the dance, the band, the football players, it’s great to see our community,” Odam said. “We’re all we got.”
That community spirit was impossible to miss at the Purple & Gold Scrimmage.
