Taylorville Falls to Mahomet-Seymour, 42-7, in Home Conference Matchup

The Taylorville Tornadoes faced a difficult test Friday night as Mahomet-Seymour brought an explosive rushing attack to Taylorville and pulled away for a 42-7 victory over the Tornadoes.

Mahomet-Seymour entered the matchup undefeated at 3-0 after scoring at least 33 points in each of its first three games. The Bulldogs continued that offensive production early, but Taylorville found a spark through the air in the second quarter behind quarterback Isaac Repscher and receiver Wyatt Younker.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring with 5:53 remaining in the first quarter, finishing a drive with a rushing touchdown from around the five-yard line. The extra point gave Mahomet-Seymour a 7-0 advantage.

Mahomet-Seymour struck again with 1:46 remaining in the opening quarter, scoring on another run from inside the red zone to extend Taylorville’s deficit to 14-0.

The Bulldogs continued leaning on the ground game in the second quarter. No. 34 powered into the end zone from approximately one yard out with 6:17 remaining, and the extra point made it 21-0.

Taylorville responded almost immediately with its biggest offensive play of the night.

With 5:27 remaining before halftime, Repscher connected with Younker for a 40-yard touchdown pass, giving the Tornadoes their first points of the game. Younker then converted the extra point himself, cutting Mahomet-Seymour’s advantage to 21-7.

The touchdown connection came from two players who have been important pieces of Taylorville’s passing attack this season. Entering Friday’s game, Repscher had recorded seven passing touchdowns, while Younker was averaging 125 receiving yards per game with three receiving scores.

Taylorville’s momentum was short-lived, however, as Mahomet-Seymour answered just 50 seconds later.

Cody Moen broke free for an approximately 85-yard touchdown run with 4:37 remaining in the second quarter. The explosive play restored the Bulldogs’ three-score advantage and sent Mahomet-Seymour into halftime leading 28-7.

Moen entered the matchup as one of Mahomet-Seymour’s leading rushers, having accumulated 308 yards through the Bulldogs’ first three games. His long touchdown Friday highlighted a Mahomet-Seymour rushing attack that repeatedly challenged Taylorville’s defense.

The Tornadoes continued battling after halftime, but the Bulldogs’ defense prevented Taylorville from finding the end zone again.

Moen delivered another big play with 2:12 remaining in the third quarter, breaking loose for a 40-yard rushing touchdown. The extra point increased Mahomet-Seymour’s advantage to 35-7 heading into the final period.

Mahomet-Seymour completed the scoring with 8:30 remaining in the fourth quarter when No. 34 broke through for another rushing touchdown, this time from more than 20 yards out. The extra point brought the game to its final margin of 42-7.

For Taylorville, the Repscher-to-Younker touchdown provided the offensive highlight on a night when sustained drives were difficult to establish. The Tornadoes showed they could create an explosive play against a strong Mahomet-Seymour defense, but the Bulldogs’ rushing attack and ability to answer quickly prevented Taylorville from building on that momentum.

The loss comes after Taylorville opened its season with consecutive victories over Richland County and Canton before suffering its first defeat against Carbondale last week. Friday’s matchup represented another demanding test against a Mahomet-Seymour team that entered the night averaging more than 45 points per game.

Despite the final margin, Taylorville showed some fight after falling behind 21-0, responding with a long touchdown of its own rather than allowing the Bulldogs to completely control the first half. The challenge was sustaining that response against a Mahomet-Seymour team capable of producing touchdowns from anywhere on the field.

The Tornadoes will now look to regroup as they continue through their 2026 schedule, taking the lessons from Friday night’s 42-7 loss and turning their attention toward the next opportunity.
