With the start of the high school football season just one week away, the Rochester Rockets took another important step toward Friday nights with their annual Orange & Blue Game, giving players an opportunity to line up across from their own teammates and put weeks of preseason work into action.
Friday’s intrasquad scrimmage wasn’t about adding a win or loss to the record. Instead, it was an opportunity for the Rockets to get back into a game-like environment, compete against one another and gain valuable live reps before the regular season officially begins.
After spending the opening weeks of practice working through drills, installations and position work, the Orange & Blue Game allowed Rochester to bring those pieces together on the field. Players on both sides of the ball were able to compete at a higher tempo while coaches got another look at their team in live situations.
For Rochester, the scrimmage also provided an opportunity for teammates who have spent the preseason practicing alongside one another to finally line up on opposite sides of the football. While the players wearing orange and blue were competing against each other Saturday, the ultimate goal remained the same — making the Rockets a better football team heading into Week 1.
The scrimmage gave Rochester’s coaching staff a chance to evaluate execution on both sides of the ball, while players were able to experience the speed and physicality of live competition before the results begin to count.
Perhaps most importantly, Rochester was able to get through the scrimmage without any major injury concerns.
“Overall — We’re healthy, so that’s the number one key,” Rochester Coach Beucker said following the scrimmage. “We survived it, everybody is good to go.”
With the Orange & Blue Game now behind them, the focus shifts toward the final week of preparation.
There will still be practices, adjustments and preparations to make over the coming days, but Friday served as one of Rochester’s final opportunities to evaluate itself in a competitive setting before turning its attention toward an opponent.
The next time the Rockets take the field under the Friday night lights, they won’t be lining up across from teammates.
Rochester officially kicks off its 2026 high school football season on Friday, Aug. 21, as the Rockets look to turn their preseason preparation into regular-season results.
