The Pawnee Indians wasted little time taking control Saturday morning, using explosive plays through the air, on the ground and on special teams to build an early advantage and cruise to a 46-8 victory over the Martinsville Bluestreaks.
The 8-man matchup kicked off at 10 a.m. in Pawnee, with the start time moved up due to the heat. From there, the Indians quickly turned the morning into a showcase for their offense.
Pawnee opened the scoring with 9:31 remaining in the first quarter when sophomore Luke Wangen (#22) found the end zone on a short touchdown run. The Indians converted the ensuing two-point attempt to take an 8-0 lead.
Quarterback Ty Lederbrand (#10) then went to work through the air.
With four minutes remaining in the opening quarter, Lederbrand connected with junior Torsten Polistina (#5) for a long touchdown pass. Another successful two-point conversion stretched Pawnee’s advantage to 16-0.
The Indians weren’t finished.
Lederbrand found Caleb White (#24) on a short pass later in the quarter, and White turned the completion into a touchdown. Pawnee again converted for two, giving the Indians a commanding 24-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Pawnee continued to find different ways to score in the second.
Wangen made his presence felt again, this time on special teams, returning a punt for a touchdown. The successful two-point conversion pushed Pawnee’s lead to 32-0 and gave Wangen his second touchdown of the game.
Lederbrand followed with his third touchdown pass, connecting with senior Lucas Seiz (#4) on a short completion that Seiz turned into another score. Pawnee added two more points after the touchdown to extend its advantage to 40-0.
The Indians’ ability to spread the football around proved to be one of the defining features of the performance. Lederbrand threw touchdown passes to three different receivers — Polistina, White and Seiz — while Wangen contributed scores both offensively and on special teams.
Pawnee added its final touchdown in the third quarter when Xavier Seiz (#25) ran the ball into the end zone. The two-point attempt was unsuccessful, but the score increased the lead to 46-0 with 1:45 remaining in the third quarter, triggering a running clock.
Despite facing the large deficit, Martinsville continued to compete and prevented the shutout with a touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter, accounting for the Bluestreaks’ eight points.
The final whistle sealed a 46-8 Pawnee victory and another strong showing for the Indians’ 8-man football program. Pawnee’s combination of an efficient passing attack, productive ground game and special-teams scoring allowed the Indians to seize control early and never relinquish it.
For Pawnee, the morning belonged to a deep group of contributors. Lederbrand directed the passing attack with three touchdowns, Wangen scored twice in two different phases of the game, and Polistina, White, Lucas Seiz and Xavier Seiz all found the end zone as the Indians put together a complete offensive performance.
Final: Pawnee 46, Martinsville 8
