Pawnee Falls Just Short as Auburn Rallies for Three-Set Victory

The Pawnee Indians came within a few points of earning a road victory Thursday night, but the Auburn Trojans battled back from an opening-set loss to defeat Pawnee in three sets, 23-25, 25-15, 25-22.

Pawnee entered the matchup looking to rebound from a three-set loss to Litchfield earlier in the week, while Auburn was attempting to snap a four-match losing streak. The result was another three-set battle for the Indians, with the deciding frame remaining competitive until the final points.

The Indians opened the night with a strong performance. Pawnee stayed composed in a tightly contested first set and was able to make the necessary plays late to edge Auburn 25-23, giving the Indians a 1-0 advantage.

Auburn responded in the second.

The Trojans found their rhythm and created separation that Pawnee was unable to overcome. Auburn took control of the frame and eventually pulled away for a 25-15 victory, evening the match at one set apiece and forcing a decisive third.

With the match on the line, neither side was able to create much breathing room in the final set.

Pawnee battled throughout the third and kept itself within striking distance as the teams approached the closing stages. The Indians continued to push Auburn, but the Trojans were able to protect their narrow advantage when it mattered most. Auburn eventually secured the final three-point margin, 25-22, to complete the comeback.

For Pawnee, the loss marked a second consecutive match that required all three sets. The Indians had also won the opening set against Litchfield on Monday before ultimately falling 23-25, 25-17, 25-21.

Despite Thursday’s result, Pawnee’s roster continues to feature a mix of experienced upperclassmen and younger contributors. Seniors Lily McCario, Ashlyne Cobb and Vynessah Verry headline the veteran group, while juniors Jada Johnson, Kloee Roland, Adelai Adomako and Lilly Skogsberg provide additional experience.

Auburn’s varsity roster includes seniors Emme Divjak, Payton Danner, Mady Staggemeyer and Addi Jones, along with setter Addie Ball and several other contributors.

The Indians have already shown their ability to compete in close matches this season, including a three-set victory over North Greene in which Pawnee captured the first and third sets by identical 26-24 scores. Thursday presented another tight finish, but this time the final points went Auburn’s way.

For Pawnee, the focus now shifts toward turning those competitive stretches into complete performances as the season moves forward.
