It was a big night in Mt. Pulaski as the 25-1 Lady Hilltoppers rebounded with a win after their lone loss of the season — and history was within reach.
Senior standout Alyson Murphy entered the night just 17 points shy of the 2,000-career-point milestone, and the packed gymnasium buzzed with anticipation. The student section was full, the ESPN table was set up, and the atmosphere felt like postseason basketball in February.
Mt. Pulaski wasted no time showing it had something to prove. With St. Joseph-Ogden focused on double-teaming Murphy early, Elayna Marten and Addison Brown stepped up in a big way. The duo knocked down key shots and kept the offense flowing as the Hilltoppers went back and forth with St. Joe in a competitive first half.
St. Joseph-Ogden countered behind Kayla Osterbur, who was lights out from the corner three-point line and helped keep her team within striking distance. Every time Mt. Pulaski made a run, St. Joe had an answer — at least for a while.
In the second half, the Hilltoppers flipped the switch.
Mt. Pulaski’s defensive press worked to perfection, overwhelming St. Joseph-Ogden and forcing turnover after turnover. The relentless pressure turned into easy transition buckets, and the momentum quickly shifted in favor of the home team. Behind a dominant third quarter, the Hilltoppers stretched their lead to 49-37, and St. Joe had no answers.
Murphy continued doing what she does best — attacking the rim and finishing through contact. With the milestone within reach, the tension in the gym grew with every possession. She needed just three points to make history.
She got her first bucket to move within one. Then, on an inbound play, Murphy took the ball straight to the hoop, driving into the paint through contact and finishing at the rim. The whistle blew, the shot dropped, and the crowd erupted.
Alyson Murphy had reached 2,000 career points.
The gym went wild in celebration as teammates and fans recognized the historic achievement. It was a moment that will never be forgotten in Mt. Pulaski basketball history.
After the game, Murphy thanked her family, coaches, and the entire community for supporting her since she was a little girl, acknowledging that the milestone was about more than just points — it was about the people who helped her along the way.
While Murphy led the way with 22 points, Addison Brown was right behind her with another impressive 23-point performance. Brown spoke after the game about her love for small-town basketball and the community that consistently shows up to support the Hilltoppers. Elayna Marten added 14 points in a strong all-around effort.
When the final buzzer sounded, Mt. Pulaski secured a statement 69-43 victory, improving to 26-1 on the season.
It was the perfect rebound with a win — a dominant second-half performance, a historic milestone, and another reminder of why this Hilltopper team has been one of the best in the state all season long.
