The Monticello Sages put together a strong two-set performance Tuesday night, defeating the Clinton Maroons 25-16, 25-17 to earn a home victory.
Monticello controlled much of the opening set, establishing an early advantage and maintaining its momentum on the way to a convincing 25-16 win. The Sages’ balanced play allowed them to take a 1-0 lead and put Clinton in a must-win position heading into the second.
The Maroons, however, did not go away easily.
Clinton provided a tougher challenge in the second set, forcing Monticello to work for its points as the Maroons attempted to extend the match. The Sages remained composed despite the increased pressure, eventually creating enough separation to close out the set 25-17 and complete the sweep.
Several Monticello players delivered key individual performances in the victory.
Junior libero Emma Lawhead anchored the Sages defensively with 10 digs, helping Monticello keep rallies alive and transition into its offense. Senior setter Emma Arnold directed the attack with 10 assists, while junior outside hitter Millie Hollingsworth led the offensive effort with seven kills.
Monticello entered the matchup after a busy early-season stretch that included a straight-set victory over Shelbyville last week. Clinton had also shown its ability to compete entering Tuesday, including a three-set win over Rantoul and a straight-set victory over Argenta-Oreana.
Despite Clinton’s effort to turn things around in the second set, Monticello was able to finish the job without allowing the match to reach a deciding third frame.
The victory moved the Sages to 6-7 on the season as they continue through the heart of their schedule.
Monticello will now turn its attention to another road test, traveling to face Mt. Zion on Thursday.
