Monticello Pulls Away From Decatur St. Teresa

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, Monticello marched down the field and scored on the opening drive of the second half to break a 13-13 tie, and pulled away for a 39-20 win over Decatur St. Teresa in non-conference high school football action from Decatur Friday night.

Zeke Young ran it in from 9 yards out on an end around and was pushed to the goal line by his offensive line to put Monticello ahead 20-13, capping a four-minute and 22-second opening drive.

Colton Schubert scored from 15 yards out with 1:49 left in the third quarter to give the Sages their biggest lead, 26-13.

The Bulldogs got within 26-20 after Gavin Paul found Reid Douglas on a 15-yard short pass that Douglas fought to the end zone on.

Monticello went back up by two scores on a goal-line keeper by Schubert with 9:21 left in the game, and Maddux Utley finished the scoring with a 21-yard score to make it 39-20.

The Schubert Young connection continued early for Monticello when Schubert found his favorite target for an 81-yard score on the first possession of the game to put the Sages in front 6-0.

It looked like St. T was going to take the game over after that. The Bulldogs answered with a 10-yard run by Luke Rhodes to make it 7-6.

St. T extended its lead when Paul used a quarterback sneak to make it 13-6 on the first play of the second quarter.

Monticello tied it late when Schubert scored the first of his four total touchdowns on a five-yard run to tie the game at 13-13.

The Bulldogs limited Young to just two catches for 86 yards with a score. Utley finished with 54 yards rushing and 45 yards receiving for 99 total yards and a score.

Will Osborne had seven receptions for 62 yards.

Schubert finished 10-of-14 for 161 yards and added 138 yards rushing on 18 carries and had four total touchdowns.

Paul finished 6-of-8 passing for 127 yards with a touchdown. Douglas had 115 total yards (90 rushing and 25 receiving) with a touchdown.

St. T drops to 3-1 overall.

Monticello improves to 4-0. They travel to Bloomington Central Catholic next Friday night. Game time is 7 pm. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
