Monticello pushed Tolono Unity through a tightly contested opening set but fell in straight sets Tuesday, 26–24, 25–20. The loss moved the Sages to 8–12 on the season.
The first set featured a back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to create much separation. Monticello stayed neck and neck with Unity into the closing points, forcing the set beyond the usual 25-point mark before the Rockets secured the two-point victory.
Unity gained more control in the second set. The Sages continued to compete, but the Rockets finished with a 25–20 win to complete the sweep.
Senior outside hitter Thea Key anchored Monticello’s defensive effort with 18 digs. Her work helped keep rallies alive and gave the Sages opportunities to respond against Unity.
Senior right-side hitter Kami Churchill contributed seven kills, providing an offensive presence at the net. Sophomore setter Avery Melton added three service aces, supplying points from the service line.
Despite the loss, Monticello’s close opening set and contributions across the court gave the Sages positives to carry into their next match.
Monticello returns home Thursday, Oct. 8, to face St Thomas More.
