With the countdown to the 2026 Illinois high school football season now under a month, four area programs took another important step in their preseason preparations Wednesday evening as the Monticello Sages hosted a 7-on-7 passing showcase at Monticello High School.
Beginning at 6 p.m., the host Sages welcomed the Warrensburg-Latham Cardinals, Mattoon Greenwave, and Champaign Central Maroons for an evening of competitive action. Each team squared off against one another throughout the event, giving coaches and players valuable repetitions against unfamiliar opponents as they continue gearing up for Week 1 of the regular season.
While the scoreboard takes a backseat during summer 7-on-7 competition, the event provided an opportunity for offenses to sharpen their timing, quarterbacks to develop chemistry with their receivers, and defensive backs to test themselves in coverage. Coaches were also able to evaluate communication, execution, and situational awareness in a game-like environment without the physical demands of full-contact football.
For Monticello, hosting the event allowed the Sages to showcase their progress on their home field while continuing preparations for what is expected to be another competitive season. The program enters the fall with high expectations after recent success and returns an experienced group looking to build on that momentum.
Warrensburg-Latham used the evening to continue developing continuity on both sides of the ball, while Mattoon gained valuable experience competing against three quality opponents from different conferences. Champaign Central also benefited from the multiple-match format, allowing the Maroons to evaluate personnel and continue installing offensive and defensive concepts before official practices intensify.
As is often the case during late July, the atmosphere centered around preparation rather than results. Players celebrated big catches, pass breakups, and interceptions, but the greater emphasis remained on improving fundamentals, building chemistry, and identifying areas that need refinement before opening night.
With August rapidly approaching, opportunities like Wednesday’s 7-on-7 become increasingly valuable. Every rep provides quarterbacks and receivers another chance to improve their timing, defenses another opportunity to communicate against different offensive looks, and coaching staffs additional film to evaluate before finalizing depth charts.
The regular season is quickly approaching, and with less than a month remaining before Friday night lights return across Illinois, programs such as Monticello, Warrensburg-Latham, Mattoon, and Champaign Central are beginning to shift their focus from summer development to regular-season execution. Wednesday night’s showcase served as another reminder that football season is just around the corner, and preparations are entering their final stages.
