Clinton Walks It Off in Conference Defensive Battle over Shelbyville

In a conference showdown that didn’t even reach the 90-minute mark, Clinton defeated Shelbyville 2-1 in a tight, defense-first battle that came down to the final at-bat.

Shelbyville struck first in the top of the 1st when Ulmer launched a solo home run to left field, giving his team a 1-0 lead. From there, both teams settled in behind strong pitching and clean defense.

Stirett delivered a solid outing for Shelbyville, going 6 innings while allowing just 2 runs (1 earned) and striking out four. Clinton’s Brock Wilson matched him, tossing 6 innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts to keep the Maroons within striking distance.

Clinton tied the game in the 6th inning when Jack Manning came home on a sacrifice fly by Stone Stith, evening things at 1-1.

The biggest turning point came in the top of the 7th. Shelbyville looked poised to take the lead when Ulmer doubled and Stirett followed with a single to right, sending him home. However, Ulmer was called out at the plate on a very close — and controversial — play that could have gone either way, keeping the game tied and shifting momentum.

Moments later in the bottom half, Clinton capitalized. Jaxon Reynolds put the ball in play, and a Shelbyville error allowed Ryan Pine to cross the plate for the walk-off run, sealing a 2-1 conference victory.

Clinton finished with six hits, with Pine leading the way with two, while Shelbyville was limited to four hits.

A fast-paced, defensive battle ultimately swung on a razor-thin call at the plate and a late defensive miscue, as Clinton found a way to walk it off.
