Clinton Battles Cerro Gordo, Falls in Straight Sets at Home

The Clinton Maroons varsity volleyball team battled through a competitive night on its home court Monday, but the Cerro Gordo Broncos came away with the victory in straight sets, defeating Clinton 25-19 and 25-18.

The opening set featured a closely contested battle between the two teams as Clinton stayed within striking distance and looked for opportunities to take control. Both sides competed hard throughout the set, but Cerro Gordo’s defense proved difficult for the Maroons to break through.

As the set progressed, the Broncos were able to create some separation and hold off Clinton’s efforts to close the gap. Cerro Gordo remained steady down the stretch and secured the opening set, 25-19, putting the Maroons in an early one-set deficit.

Cerro Gordo carried that momentum into the second set and quickly established control. The Broncos built a sizable advantage and maintained their lead for much of the set, forcing Clinton to battle from behind.

Despite facing the deficit, the Maroons continued to compete and began putting together a late push. Clinton was able to cut into Cerro Gordo’s advantage toward the end of the set, showing some fight as the Maroons attempted to extend the match to a third.

The Broncos, however, responded when needed and prevented Clinton from completing the comeback. Cerro Gordo closed out the second set with a 25-18 victory to finish off the straight-set win.

While the night ended in a loss for Clinton, the Maroons showed their ability to compete with the Broncos during a tightly contested opening set and continued battling even after falling behind by a significant margin in the second. Clinton’s late push provided a positive finish to the night despite ultimately coming up short on the scoreboard.

Cerro Gordo leaves Clinton with the 2-0 victory, while the Maroons will look to regroup and build off Monday night’s performance as they continue their season.
