Braves Clamp Down on Defense to Open Taylorville Holiday Tournament with Win

The Mt. Zion Braves picked up their fifth win of the season on Monday night, outlasting the Marion Wildcats 43–36 to open play at the Taylorville Holiday Tournament. It also marked Mt. Zion’s first tournament victory and one that was built squarely on the defensive end of the floor.

Mt. Zion set the tone early, smothering the Wildcats and allowing just four points in the opening quarter. That defensive intensity carried into the second period, as Marion managed only 10 points in the entire first half. While the Braves had timely contributions offensively, it was their ability to disrupt passing lanes, contest shots, and control the pace that proved to be the difference.

The second half followed a similar script. Marion, a team averaging around 60 points per game coming into the contest, was held to just 36 points for the night. Mt. Zion continued to force tough looks and limit second-chance opportunities, maintaining control down the stretch to secure the win.

Connor Cuddy, Brody Lipa, Braxton Rhoades, Holden Wirey, and Jordan Sams all turned in solid all-around performances, contributing on both ends of the floor and providing the balance needed to close out a hard-fought victory.

With the win, the Braves improve to 5–4 overall and 1–0 in the Taylorville Holiday Tournament. Mt. Zion will continue tournament play with upcoming matchups against Jacksonville, Limestone, and one opponent to be determined on New Year’s Eve.

Marion falls to 7–2 overall and 0–1 in tournament play. The Wildcats will look to rebound as they also face Limestone, Jacksonville, and another opponent to be announced on December 31.
