Bombers Rally Past Monticello for Straight-Set Victory

The Argenta-Oreana Bombers opened their varsity volleyball matchup against the Monticello Sages with a dramatic comeback before carrying that momentum into the second set, earning a 2-0 victory at Argenta-Oreana High School.

Argenta-Oreana claimed the opening set 26-24 and followed with a 25-22 win in the second to complete the sweep.

The first set provided the biggest drama of the night.

Monticello appeared to be firmly in control late, building a commanding 24-18 advantage and moving within a single point of taking the opening set. Instead, the Bombers refused to go away.

With their backs against the wall, Argenta-Oreana put together an impressive run, fighting off six set points while completely erasing Monticello’s advantage. The Bombers scored eight consecutive points to turn the six-point deficit into a 26-24 victory, stunning the Sages and giving the home team a 1-0 advantage in the match.

The late comeback shifted the momentum firmly in Argenta-Oreana’s direction heading into the second set.

Monticello responded and kept itself within striking distance throughout the second frame, but the Bombers again found a way to finish. Argenta-Oreana held off the Sages down the stretch to secure a 25-22 victory, closing out the match in straight sets.

The Bombers’ victory was highlighted by their resilience in a first set that appeared all but decided. Coming back from 18-24 and winning eight straight points gave Argenta-Oreana a dramatic opening-set victory before the Bombers finished the job in Set 2.

For Monticello, the loss came despite putting itself in excellent position to take the opening set and remaining competitive throughout the second. The Sages were led by head coach Hayes Murray, while Kaitlyn Landrus-Horn leads the Argenta-Oreana program.
